Forgive the post as I am completely new to overclocking, but I recently got a 6800 GTO with my new computer and was really ticked off at myself for not realizing it wasn't a "true" GT. I have read several threads of others saying they open up the extra 4 pipes bringing it to 16. My question is, does this give the card a significant performance boost, or should I be content with how the card came set up; especially since I don't know what I am doing. Will it damage my comp????

If it's a true 6800gto pci instead of being just a 6800 pci (NV41 core) then you can softmod it with Rivatuner. Search here for my inof on it or just google it to get the latest version. I've read a 6800 GTO eaily unlocks to 16,6 and can clocke better than 6800 ultra speeds sometimes. Of couorse, this is all YMMV because nothing is guaranteed when you oc, but at least you can open up the extra pipes and shader. This will improve perfomance. Don't worry softmods won't really harm yuor card. Just look on the video card forum and read the Rivatuner sticky. It will talk about a 6800NU, but the instructions apply to your card also.

It's gives the card a performance boost, but it's not huge vs a 6800GT at stock speed.

Try unlocking the card (see the sticky in the nvidia subforum). If it doesn't unlock, you might want to consider trading it in to dell for the regular 6800 256MB PCI-E card. That would save you at least $130 and not have much of a performance hit.

I have a 6800GTO and it unlocked and overclocks great. Mine is at 425/1150, better than a stock BFG 6800 Ultra OC. :D
