Hello everyone.

I am trying to put together a vmware lab. I have come across a Dell poweredge T610 for 250.00 bucks. I was wondering if it was a good deal. Has 6gb of memory, 2.93 x5570 with another socket to add one more, perc6i card, 3 or 4 (cant remember) 146gb sas 15k drives. I know I will need to add some more memory....but is this a good deal?
 
The deal seems like a good deal. You will definitely want to add more RAM though.
 
It's a good deal for what you're getting. I'll also mirror peanuthead and say Memory is typically what you run out of first. The problem is memory is not cheap especially for Server class ECC..etc.
 
Well..there are other factors that you need to look at. Is heat/power/noise a factor? Will this be in a home? I mean..you can probably quite this thing down but typically they are loud.

You also have to look at what you're trying to get out of this. Do you plan on using this for storage like an AIO..if so, I would say the chassis may not be suitable since it's a 1u..etc.
 
I dont think i will be doing much storage based stuff. I already have a synology ds1412+. Noise and heat really arent a factor. The T610 is the tower version. It's not the rack version.
 
Oops..misread..thought it was the R610..I would say go for it then.
 
The T610 is a great little server very up-gradable.

I have one with dual Xeon E5649 and 64 GB of ram.
PERC H700 Integrated RAID Controller, 1GB NV Cache
600GB 10K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 2.5in Hotplug Hard Drive - Quantity 6 running in Raid 10

I have it running 5 virtual machines on Hyper-V.
