Dell 2005fpw setup problem

My friend just called me. He got a Dell 2005fpw and is having problems setting it up. He went into the device manager and updated the driver from the cd. Now the resolution of 1680x1020 is available but when he hits that the screen goes black. He has to turn the monitor off and then back on to get it to come back and then the resolution is 800x600. He has a Nvidia Geforce4 mx 440 video card. What could this be? I could not figure it out over the phone. I do not have this monitor. Thanks!!!
