degrading computer: help needed

ok so here is the problem... about a month ago i built my first computer its mostly made out of middle range hardware that fits into my high schooler budget, all except the hard drive which is older but i believe to be still in good shape. So it had this random reboot problem at first which i just couldnt figure out. i tried the memory, power supply, and video card so i decided, reluctantly, to ignore the problem and take it to a shop later when i had enough money. Now is where the real problem starts. Maybe 1 week ago the desktop, after a while of being turned on, wouldnt get rid of the apps. windows on the desktop screen. Also when i drag a window it would leave a trail and it wouldnt go away. I figured this was a virus problem so i scanned and yes i found a few, deleted, repaired and went on. This didnt seem to fix the problem. This i believed to be caused by one trojan virus which couldnt be deleted because of its location. So it being late at night i decided i would sleep on it and reformat in the morning if i wouldnt find a patch or something. At that time the desktop problem was getting worse. Instead of encountering the problem 3 hours from when i turned on the computer i was now encountering it 15-20 min into my comuter usage. So now i cant even log on my computer. Im running windows 2000 pro and when i get the the title screen or whatever, before i can log-in, it stalls however it doesnt reboot it just sits there. I dont know what to do i wanted to ask around before i admit defeat and take it to a shop. If you have any idea how to fix this problem let me know. if the hardware in my computer needs to be listed let me know and it will be done. this all happened over a course of a week.
 
List your hardware. Or just add it to your sig. It really sounds like something is slowly failing or is overheating. Did you reformat, re-install and still have the problem? Also try unplugging and reseating the ram, vid card, pci cards, processor, and all cables and wires. If it's still is not working right then there is likely a hardware problem of some kind.

Also, did you run a thorough scandisk? A failing hard drive can cause all kinds of windows problems. Think corrupted swap file...

Check all your fans and make sure they are running.

I usually don't recommend a nuke and pave because almost everything can be fixed by a competent tech, but your OS sounds like it is screwed. Nuke and pave man after running that scandisk.
 
and may i assume that nuke and pave is aka erase and reload OS?.... CUS THATS HOW I SOLVE ALL MY PROBLEMS.... :D... whenever i have a problem, i trouble shoot, then when i m beat and sit there thinking, i pick up my winXP cd and reload it all and voila, a new computer
