I personally am over watercooling with the same amount of fans as an air cooled system just to push it the extra 50mhz.

Just a quick question if you please, you wouldn't happen to be running a Winchester-die technology based A64 setup would you?

Hehe... it is a A64 FX-53 Clawhammer.

Yah, the Winchesters are notorious for barely overclocking much better on phase-change, let alone with water-cooling in comparison to air-cooling. The Newcastle based FX-53's work okay with phase but show little difference between air and water.

The newer San Diego/Venice cores are somewhat of a return to the good old days. My play with Winchester cores was extremely disappointing. They simply did not respond well to any form of decent cooling for overclocking.

Each CPU is different, just as each CPU die-process type responds differently. Was looking rather grim there for the last 12 months with AMD setups with them not really responding well to better cooling.

Some people want to run "big bore" stuff with tons of fans running full steam and some people want to run "euro" stuff completely silent. Cathar is right that if that is the desire, phase change is the only way to go.

I guess we all should agree to disagree. :)

Are you stupid or just ignorant? There is no reason you cant cool completely silently with a "big bore" system. You could make a setup that is just as silent as your beloved "euro" system that doesn't sacrifice any performance in order to do so.

I am waiting for the X2 to become more available before getting one. From what I have seen, they overclock pretty well.

.......
on what mobo?

they are far outside of my price range, however talking to some of my friends who are still hanging tough in elec. eng and comp. eng, the general consensus before their release, and long before any of us can get them was that they would be a real pain to overclock for voltage supply/regulation reasons.

since i am not really looking at them for myself, i have not done in-depth research, however venice looks like it has everything that i want in t a processor, in spades.

X2's are very efficient. From the sites I've looked at an X2 draws less power than current FX cpu's, even when clocked...

haven't tried one, don't know for sure.

our early speculation was that although stock power consumption was lower than an equivalently performign single core, that power consumption would increase more quickly than the single core solutions, coming up to equal or greater power consumption with a moderate overclock, necessitating 5 or 6 phase power supply for clean voltages at high overclocks.

a FX CPU is also well outside of my price range.

i'd like a venice 3200, but i might end up going with the 3000 for purely financial reasons.

I believe I have recently settled on the 3200 venice for my new computer, although I still might go for 3700+ san diego. Anyways there aren't many financial considerations between the 3200 and the 3000.... there is only like a 50$ price difference, surely you could afford the 50$ in order to get the higher multiplier.

i'm pulling as much OT as my employer is offering in order to spend anything on my computer at all.

what $50 US represents to me:

3 weeks of fuel.
or
3 weeks of food.
or
half of a textbook
or
a new outfit of clothing
or
1.5 months of highspeed internet (priorities, priorities....)

i drive as much as i have to, and i eat more than i should.

at the moment i am able to carpool with another worker on the 45 minute commute to work.

as i have commented over in the automotive forum, nothing would please me more than to have some viable means of getting to and from work and school via public transit and reserve driving for recration and pleasure out on the track.

at my present level of muscle-tone and physical activity, i should really weigh about 4 kilos less than i do.

the eating habits of a pretty hardcore athlete, especially when it came to swimming, die hard.

Well this little jewel pumps out 850 watts continuous (950 peak) at any case temperature it is likely to be run in. I don't think there will be any problems running the new processors with that PSU even if you are running a SLI rig. Based on the way the majority of PSU manufacturers rate their supplies it would be equivalent to about a 1200-1400 watt supply

motherboard side, not PSU side. i have seen that supply, and given the "if i won the lottery, which i do not play" scenario, i would definately have a PCP&C unit in my rig, and depending on reviews of that unit, it would probably be that specific supply, just to have the extra headroom.

i don't know anyone who runs SLI, BTW.

wow, things got all civil and 5h17 all of a sudden. it makes me feel out of place. :)

None of the answers really suit my specs:

Not to say that money is no object, unless you're mad wealthy money is always an object however I'm willing to spend more on something that looks great while providing acceptable (by my definitions and for my needs on a particular build).

I don't care how great it looks if it's complete crap but I'm willing to spend a little more for something that looks really good even at the cost of sacrificing (marginal) performance.

If something looks like twice-stewed ass and is only slightly better than a great looking piece of kit I'm going with the aesthetics.

For me it's a matter of balancing all three factors:
Reasonable price although I'm willing to spend a little more than some people may.
Good to very good performance even if it's slightly less than another rig.
Great appearance/design/construction/features/etc.

OK.. your system sucks! ;)
there we are. :)

now, if you had specified cooling vs hardware, it might have stung a bit more, since i already know damn well that my CPU/GPU/MOBO is outdated.

oh well, i guess that we will have to content ourselves with semi-civil and mildly ironic for the time being, eh?

So what were you using before you got the FX-53 from Aviddigi? What other MB's and CPU's have you run lately?
