never really looked into Nvidia stuff so what would about the same Nvidia card be to like an ATI 9600 pro or 9800 pro?
 
nVidia 6600 plain or 6600 GT. I would get either of these before either of the two you mentioned, but their availability is currently low and they may be overpriced.

Also consider last gen 5700, 5900.
 
nvidia made the plain 5700 to compete with the plain 9600 and the plain 5900 to compete with the plain 9800
