Data backup... needs to be quick

My notebook fans seem to have gone kaput and now I need to send it in to HP.

But I have tons and tons of data on it from school projects, websites, and lots of mp3 files. I only have a CD Burner and about 10 700 mb disks. The problem is that since the fans on my notebook are dead it will over heat and shutdown in about 20-25 minutes, probably less if I am burining disks.

I need to backup around 18 gigabytes of data. And I have 2 full sites which include tons of tiny files which will probably take some time to copy all in themselves. How can I do this??

I do have my own FTP server but that has something like 700 mb free on it's drive...

Any suggestions are more than welcome ^_^

Thanks!

If you're on a home network, you can transfer all the data to another computer. If not, borrow (or buy) a USB or firewire external hard drive. And it'll be good long term investment.

I am on a home network. I wasn't clear I suppose; I have a desktop server as well. But it only has 700 mb free.

Also, I should probably mention that I have no money, and I need to have this resolved by Thursday at the latest, with the data saved or not.

Thanks

Start prioritizing what you want to save. Most of that data you can live without. On an expiramental note, try propping the notebook up off the desk and using a fan or something else to blow on it. I know it sounds stupid, but it actually worked with an old Sony I had to fix for someone.

Heh, my HDD is 40 gigs. And I have so far organized it into blocks of 700. All of which I *need* to be saved. Not including my 4 gigs of music @_@

And I may have to do just that... I might pop back into the case and see if I can repair the fans. But I will probably need to find a fan or something =_=

go into a cool room and burn those CD's

u know those notebook coolers? try to simulate this with an ordinary house fan

Yeah.. I have a fan on it at high. But now when I try to burn a disk the CD burning goes on the fritz 3/4 of the way through 0_0

If you cant burn, cant copy, and have no cash to buy a external drive I'd say your out of luck. I'd call HP and tell them your drive has sensative data on it and if you can send it back without the drive and see if thats OK with them.

Nah, they'd have a fit. And if I send it in with any "sensitive data" I'll be charged for preserving it since they want to reformat it to factory default settings.

But anyways...

I put 2 house fans, and 6 case fans... ranging from 40mm to 120mm ^-^ now the ambient temperature is a cool 36 degrees celsius... even better with the fans working (it was 48 celsius when they worked)
