I've been looking for a multi-bay DAS/JBOD unit and haven't had much luck. Everything by Sans Digital, Vantec, Rosewill, Mediasonic, etc., all seem to be littered with poor reviews, so I am considering a movie to a NAS unit. The Synology stuff seems to be highly recommended and I like how I can expand to 15 bays in the future if required.

I don't know if I'm comfortable with reading and writing over a network, though. Do you think I am going to really notice a difference in basic operations (downloading/copying) between a DAS (external enclosure) and a NAS? Or should I just try harder to find a DAS/JBOD enclosure, as a NAS might be overkill?
 
I'm intimidated by the idea. Most rackmount cases I'm pulling up are a couple hundred to start, so it seems like I'd be spending the same amount of money as I would for a pre-built NAS. And I am clueless about the SAS thing, although I assume I can just ignore that and use SATA.

If 2.5" works, offer $300. That has the JBOD switch already :D I'd also ask them to swap out to the platinum or SQ PSU if it's in a room with you. The gold are going to be loud if it's under your desk, next to you, etc...

If not you can find 4U 24 bay 3.5" for $200-400
The JBOD switch is ~100$ by itself new though, so keep that in mind.

They have tons of backplane options too, so make sure you get the one you need/want. (3Gb/s, 6Gb/s, 12Gb/s, expander, dual expander, i-Pass, etc..)

Not sure of your budget either.

How much do you want to spend?

I have a 5 bay synology and it cost ~$800 with no drives.

I can build a JBOD for $400 guaranteed that holds 24 drives 2.5" or 3.5"

50% the cost of the synology (obv. no system inside, but you want DAS ideally, right?)

My backup NAS is in a DS380B. 8 hot swap drives. The drives get hot, and I'm about to install a 2nd fan to fix that :) I posted a pic of the heat in the storage show-off thread. I like this for the $ and what you get in this TINY package.
 
1Gig network = very limiting if you have the # of drives to max, which is easy to do with 1 SSD or # of HD depending on RAID setup you're using.

This is why I went with 10GigE. I HATE copying shit to/from my NAS and waiting and waiting... and why I'm ditching my synology ;)
 
You could roll your own 10GigE NAS with SuperMicro's new setup with Intels 4 or 8 core Xeon-D, but now we're talking 1k$+ before you're done ;) but it would smack the hell out of any synology in that price range most likely by a huge margin ;)

You also didn't mention if you're going from or to SSD on either end... if you have a 5TB SPINNING HD in your desktop then moving between your NAS and desktop won't be such a huge difference as-if you had SSD to move the data to when comparing DAS to NAS file copy performance.
 
Performance wise,
If you connect a disk to Sata, you will see a sequential performance of up to 200 MB/s and a random performance with small read/writes of about 100 iops.

If you use a low power NAS with a smartphone alike CPU and a few hundred MB of RAM with the same disk, your sequential performance over an 1G network may fall to 40 MB/s with a similar iops rate.

If you use a high performance NAS with the same RAM on 1G, your performance can go up to about 100 MB/s. If your NAS has enough RAM that can be used as a cache like with ZFS, your read iops can explode as most reads are delivered from RAM. Write iops will increase but not with the same amount.

If you use the same on a 10G network, sequential performance is comparable to local performance while iops are much higher with enough RAM in the NAS.

Remains another aspect.
On a NAS, you can use newer filesystems like ZFS with checksums, self repair, crash resistent copy on write with versioning based on readonly snaps. Data security is much higher, no risk that you or a virus can encrypt or delete without an undo option.
 
Oh so you're really looking for all-in-one 'storage in a box'. You're not going to find that new for $200. Not anywhere.

Yes, from ads, not from reality
High performance high quality storage is i3 or Xeon with 16, 32, 64 or 128 GB ECC RAM on 3rd gen filesystems,
not Atom with 2-6 GB unsecure non ECC RAM on ext4 filesystems

I would do a nas but build it with a micro atx type board. This will allow you to add a das if needed down the road. Look at node 802 case
