My antec truepower 430 went low on the 5v rail. Since I think it's still in warrenty I havent' bothered opening it up, not that there's anything I can adjust in there. This leaves me with a rather big problem, the PSU that came with my case 5+ years ago just isn't enough so I need something new. I've been looking at the thermal take tr2-420w with the active PFC. Good? Bad? I'd like a silent PSU that I can generaly abuse for quite a long time.
Some expert advice would be of great help.

I loved my ModStream, can't go wrong there. Incidentally, what board will this be powering?

According to what? A software program? If you want a quiet PSU, you do not buy a Thermaltake.

Seconded. That Thermaltake TR2 series is like their bottom-of-the-line series. As such, it is relatively noisy, and its single +12V rail is on the weak side (rated 18A at only 25 degrees C) - too weak for a modern system.

It'll be powering an abit kt7a-raid with a 1.2g athlon. But I also run a lot of drives so the more oompfh the better. All I can find localy is the thermaltake and antec truepower 2.0's. I think there's also enermax liberty's at the local shop but I think they were all in excess of 500w which I just don't need.

The 5v rail was low according to software and my multimeter. I had gotten a 200gb seagate that had problems starting up with the antec. I switched to my old junky PSU and it had no problems. The old junky PSU just isn't enough to power everything though.

Unfortunately, you will have to order your PSU online (over the Web). You see, none of those PSU's which you can find locally are anywhere close to ideal for your setup - the Thermaltake has a weak +12V rail (which your drives run off of), while your motherboard is primarily a +5V mobo and cannot use the +12V2 rail on a dual-rail unit such as the Antec TPII series. Thus, you will need a PSU which can supply a lot of power on both the +5V rail and the single +12V rail (which the Thermaltake TR2 simply cannot come anywhere close to what you need, since both the +5V rail and the +12V rail on that unit are relatively weak).

RMA it...

From what I've seen on the web, the main caps hold up, while the others crap out after a while, I have the same power supply BTW...

My warranty is void, I'll probably be looking at recapping it some time soon.

my cousins 480W Neo Power after a little more then a year in use has died last week with the 5V line dead. I did alot of testing and the last thing i did was test out the psu and it ended up being a dead 5V line confirmed with the psu tester :) I was suprised that a Neo Power died

Trust your multimeter more. Also, we need to know your exact multimeter readings: If it's lower than 4.75V, then something inside your original TP430 PSU is pooping out.

By the way, I did underrate the Thermaltake TR2 420W/430W unit somewhat. That unit is made by the same company which makes Antec's lower-end units (CWT). However, the TR2 is cheap only because it's an old-spec unit (using an older design as used in Antec's recently discontinued Solution Series PSU's) in flashy new packaging. And though the TR2 has no PFC in most countries, EU and UK units are required to have Active PFC.

Put it this way, the TR2 is perfectly fine for an AGP-equipped Socket 478 Intel P4 system - but may not suffice for an nForce4/AMD Athlon 64 system.

454v for the multimeter readings with 12.03 for the 12v rail.
I'm not running a P4 or an A64, but I have 4 hds, 2 optical drives and a 9600xt to power.
I'm not sure if the PSU at the local store has the PFC or not, I should look into that.
What I'd really like is to not have to deal with this at all, but thems the breaks. As far as RMA goes I'd rather not wait for the RMA in order to use my sysem (not even sure if I can still RMA it) fully.
