I ran chkdsk today and there were 5 stages to the scan. At stage 4 (verifying file data) it reached 4% then the whole computer hanged. The keyboard didnt respond so I had to do a hard reboot. I ran chkdsk again and this time at stage 4 it reached 3% and hanged.

I've ran both the quick and extended Data Lifeguard diagnostics tests that I downloaded from the Western Digital website and it reports nothing wrong.

Is my hard drive dying? It's a little over a year old, what could cause this to happen? Hard drive is a Western Digital WD3200KS-00PFB0

Data lifeguard tools are going to be checking to make sure there is no physical damage to the drive. A corrupt filesystem wouldn't be detected by then, but could easily cause chkdsk to hang

are you running checkdisk through the recovery console?

No, I am right clicking on the hard drive, selecting properties, then tools, then error checking. I tick both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".

I reboot and it runs automatically (blue screen).

do you have an XP cd that you could try booting to and running it in recovery console?

boot to the cd
hit "R" to access the recovery console
(recovery console comes up)
(asks you which windows installation you want to access) hit 1 >enter
enter your administrator password.
then you get a prompt c:\
type chkdsk /r and hit enter

boot to the cd
hit "R" to access the recovery console
(recovery console comes up)
(asks you which windows installation you want to access) hit 1 >enter
enter your administrator password.
then you get a prompt c:\
type chkdsk /r and hit enter

Ok thanks, I will follow these steps tonight

Thanks, it worked I think...

I ran it, took a few hours but it said it found and fixed errors on the drive.
