Damn Microsoft & the Windows 10 Update Crap!

I just built a new rig (Windows 7) & I knew not to allow MS to install KB3035583 update. It worked for 3 days & then I noticed I has some more updates yesterday. There was no KB3035583 in those new updates. Then this morning I boot-up my computer & there's that damn WIN10 icon in my tray.

Did MS change the update to a different code? Damn MS! They are so sneaky. Now I have to spend time trying to rid my new system of it.

I thought there were several different KB numbers over the last couple months.

They've made it basically impossible to disable unless you disable Windows Update. Selectively disabling updates is like playing whack a mole.

Maybe try finding the actual executable and deleting it and replacing it with an executable that doesn't do anything and has permissions that make it impossible for Windows to delete or replace it.

I have to think you accidentally got the 3035583. I know on my last reinstall I disabled updates and selected all except that. then kept doing it. It would show up every so often, sometimes recommended, important, optional, etc.

Yeah MS is making updating without getting the Win 10 spamware a real pain in the ass. It popped up on my last update and I had to disable and hide it again. So instead of just installing all the recommended updates now I have to spend a lot of time reading each and every single one of them to make sure it doesn't install that spamware on my system. I don't trust MS anymore to not consider it a "security fix" in the future. I guess from their point of view it would be since they won't want to fix some kernel exploit in win 7 so the only "patch" is to update to Win 10. Don't just assume 3035583 is the only update you have to watch out for also suspicious is 3112343 which is described:
This update enables support for additional upgrade scenarios from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and provides a smoother experience when you have to retry an operating system upgrade because of certain failure conditions. This update also improves the ability of Microsoft to monitor the quality of the upgrade experience.
Don't know for certain if it is an updated spamware app but I won't install it to find out. ;)

I've got mine set to manual updates and only do the security updates. Anything marked as a recommended update doesn't get installed.

I removed all the Windows 10 related updates a while ago following a guide online plus changing the registry to disable OS updates and haven't had anything show up since then.

Did they move it from Recommended to Important? There is a check box to say "Give me recommended updates as important" or something which would install much of the non-security stuff automatically.

They made W10 updates such that you can mark them as unimportant...but they'll immediately lose that status marker on next Win update try.

Install this. MTRT.

Created by a IT geek/tech, like us. I read through all the documentation that I could including researching things that it disables, and as far as I can tell, everything is 100% legit. So much so that I deployed it across all devices on my home network. No more BS Windows 10 nag crap.

The only downside is that updates have to be done manually, which can be a slight pain. I guess that's what update Tuesdays are for though. :D

There's been about 2-3 dozen Windows Updates for W7 associated with W10 updates and telemetry. Thus far.

46 by my count total for both 7 & 8.

Since they've started reverting the "AllowOSUpgrade" registry and/or GP entries on machines to allow 10 to install, I turned off updates. MS can get bent.

Why Microsoft Says Windows 10 Upgrades Cannot Be Stopped

I have also turned off all updates. Make sure to install the latest GWX control panel app, as MS has changed the code so the old one does not work with the latest NOV updates.

"but for it to work and crucially for it to work as fast as Microsoft wants, it has to be forcibly kickstarted."

This is kind of backfiring from what I am seeing. Roughly 1 in 5 upgrades have been problematic, ranging from BSoDs to printers, graphics and third party software. Mass adoption happens on the market's own accord, and realistically MS has an uphill any way you slice it because they did an excellent job with 7. The market needs to be convinced that they have a need to upgrade and upgrading to 10 not only doesn't have many benefits, it could tragically turn the computer into a zombie. Being forced into it and having upgrades that need to be reverted has automatically turned those 20% of upgraders off of 10, clean install or not (I can't convince them to let me clean install it). They will spread the word that 10 is no bueno and I see bad things resulting for 10.

I'm sick of Windows installing KB3035833. I have removed it and hidden it on 3 different computers. It has been reinstalled on them all again at various times.

Did you install the GWX Control Panel? No more headaches if you do.

I was installing Windows 7 on a friend's shiny new laptop a few days ago. She couldn't handle 8.1.
Even though I chose not to touch updates during setup, right after installation it started making connections to 'random' IPs and pulling data. Had to stop the Updater in services.msc before it finally quit. It's a really sad day when you have to disable updates on a relatively modern and liked OS because the vendor decided to turn on it and its users.

To each its own but...

So far I have updated over 50 devices ranging from desktops, laptops, tablets and surface pro 2/3. Most of them with windows 7 and the rest with 8/8.1

To date I've had ZERO problems other than a surface 3 pro touchscreen not working but that was solved via a firmware update.

Yep, that GWX Control Panel and Spybot Antibeacon has stopped Microsoft dead in its tracks. For now anyway.
