Dabbling in mining as a hobby

The beta driver for mining is working rather well. Wattman works like it should including the specific profile made for Nicehash. Performance wise I say it is a little bit faster, about 15 cents faster per day which in the end is not much. It may work much better with multiple cards but I can't test that out with a single Nano. In the future I should be able to at least test with up to 3 AMD cards.

I stand corrected, OC 1080 Ti mem +309 (5315 x 2 = 10630), USD now is $5 a day Nicehash. This is also using the 1700x as well which is running at 3.94ghz at 47% cpu usage.
my 1700 stock was only using half my cores. I upped the threads in the config and got more out of my ryzen 1700 @ 3.8ghz right now

Between my laptop my 280x and the little bit from cpus I hit 3.06 per day today... Mind you that is just the two machines.

I looked in the config files and could not find anything resembling number of threads for the CPU. Where do I do that?

EVGA Precision sucks from my view point. Graphs are squished together, such small fonts and few designation of values it is worthless for me. I've have yet been able to undervolt, even using the stupid gHz and mV curves - it never changes the voltage it seems except for up and so easy to crash. Watman from RTG is infinitely more intuitive, clearer on the values and much better profile capability.

I put in one 1070 in with the 1080 Ti in the Ryzen rig, the third pcie slot I was going to stick the other 1070 except there is insufficient room in the case to do that. I did each compute device a test to see in $ value what they give per day and this is the break down in NiceHash.
  • Radeon Nano - $2.20/day
  • Ryzen 1700x at 3.9ghz, 47% cpu usage - $1/day
  • Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 - $2.25/day
  • EVGA 1080 Ti SC Black - $3.60/day
The 1080 Ti packs a punch so to speak. I am sure I have much to learn in pushing each one to their full potential. The 1700x if I could pushed it to near 100% (don't know how to do that yet) getting $2/day using less than 150w would be more efficient then Nano and close to the 1070 to be honest. I have not heard miners using Ryzen for mining but it looks very doable, at least to me (TR? Epyc?). Also the 1080 Ti you could pack more of those in a machine vice having multiple machines and current cost of 1070's may make the 1080 Ti a better choice.

Still if I bought these cards vice already owning them, I just don't see a good return on the investment if building from scratch, in this case I will be putting to use hardware making some money.

Considering rig for mining going to be built with mostly on hand parts:
  1. ASUS 990fx Sabertooth R1 with FX 9590 (underclocked, undervoltage and maybe a few modules turned off as well to minimize power usage)
  2. 2x 1070's - $4.50/day combined
  3. 1 Radeon 290 - ~ $2/day
  4. Will see if a 7970 will add anything to it ?
Looking at for today rates $195+ minus electrical costs with decreasing rates as time goes on. Plus if I mine with the Nano and 1080Ti when not being used that could add another $60-$100 per month. The motherboard has potential for five total cards.

Using MSI Afterburner which is much more intuitive was able to get the 1070 to $2.45/day and the 1080Ti to $4.23/day. Ryzen tested was $1.05/day. I guess rates fluctuates as well during the day. Still MSI Afterburner is way better and easier to use then Precision.

I've tried overclocking with Afterburner and I can't seem to add more than ~50-60mhz to my core without Nicehash throwing errors... I can decrease vcore at stock clocks to conserve power and reduce heat, but overclocking even with raised voltages just doesn't seem to be working for me :(

My main thinhg right now is Nicehash's update removed AMD's support from V2, so I need to use Nicehash Legacy for the AMD card, and my daily rate has reduced significantly, from ~$2.50+ to $2.10 at best...

when i switched my rates went up...

I am hoping I can run two instances of Nicehash for mixed cards, Nvidia and AMD on upcoming mining rig. Will see.

Why do people bother mining anyways? ROI right now on Eth is like a year with Vegas? I suppose if you factor in getting half your money back it's 6 months. Still seems like a long time with such a volatile market...

Money is money... when the computer just sits there idle 80-90% of the time why not have it making money in the meantime? I'm getting average $2/day out of my PC's combining for about $10usd per day... $70/week usd, ~$300/month extra income... while I sleep.

Yeah I invested some $$$ in graphics cards, but those are still worth what I paid because I got them used for bottom dollar... so even if I only make a hundred or two hundred bucks from mining, I still have 6 high-end graphics cards worth $$$, and as a byproduct, I have 6 decently high end gaming computers :)

For my stuff, I have an ROI of everything is paid for in 3 months. So if stuff gets harder and I make less money, I can double my ROI estimate and still have everything paid for in 6 months. Then I have 6 high-end graphics cards for FREE.

So you tell me, why wouldn't I bother?

because there's more than just vegas out there? There's also more that just eth out there. I just brought 4 more 1050 ti's online a couple days ago. over $1/day a piece off of $150 (new) cards. I prefer the 1060's or 1070's but they're harder to find at sane prices.

Roger. I'll have to read the entire thread. I am slightly concerned about the IRS and reporting actual earnings.

I am kind of a hypocrite. Right after that post I bought two 1080ti hybrids. I figure winter is coming.... free heat.

I am looking at nicehash. I might just use the bitcoins at newegg or something. Not fond of the idea of bank account transactions and all that.

I am holding what i am mining.

I mined out 22.8 coins in 2014-2015 and sold for an average of ~650 according to my coinbase report.

That 22.8btc is ~104k USD today.

So... yeah.

If you are going to mine, screw the whole ROI mindset.

Buy top-end parts that retain their value, or buy for pennies on the dollar - but whatever you do, get out of the whole mine'n'sell mentality. Folks have screwed themselves for years now so badly it's madness.

BTC's ultimate top-end dollar valuation is in the hands of millionaires and billionaires now.

I think i agree with this. I sold 4 at 1200

Bitcoin is a limited market so if it stays popular it should only go up.

I need to investigate further and learn a LOT more, but I personally want to create a nice portfolio of crypto-currencies, you know every single one of them (Eth included) is worth what BTC was a long time ago, and if ANY of them start skyrocketing like BTC and ETH have, getting into them early is what you want... so I want to get as much as I can in as many as I can to start with, then I can get smarter with which ones are more viable... ZCash just sounds good, like it could gain traction just because it's called ZCASH. Or am I crazy?

I sold hundreds under $100.

My present line of thought is taking what was going to supplement my 401k above the company matching is funding this. Yeah its a high risk investment but I have extra money. The main thing is never pull a dime out and into your bank account. Taxes suck and even if the IRS sets up camp on bitcoin there's still plenty of coins they're not looking at in any way.

Is bitgo safe? How do you guys store your bitcoins?

Also noticed Newegg takes bitcoins...

bought my HAF and 16 gig of ddr 3 from newegg for btc not too long ago
in 2014 i bought my 280x from tiger direct... with bit coin

Getting a LOT less today than I have been recently, is that due to some market changes? Getting $2/day from my dual 970 box and ~$1.60 from my 1070...

Bitcoin is back down to 4k a massive sell off happened when it hit 5k it now has to climb back up and now should be when the alt coins correct and see some gains... Btc hit 4089 yesterday it is already back to 4250 I would not be surprised if it was not back to 5k by the end of the week

I got two 1080Ti's from dabbling in and out of Crypto. Put them to work as well.

my little mini-farm generates ~$600 a month for doing nothing. All the cards are paid for and my electricity is dirt cheap 7 cents per kwh delivered, bonus is that my house stays nice and toasty this winter for free.

Username checks out :)

If you're focused on USD value you're doing it wrong. Market also prone to wild fluctuations. Just installing nicehash and clicking start isn't much of a cryptocurrency education, I'd advise doing some reading so you know what's going on.

$600 from 2 1080tis? You must have other cards.

Just an update! I still have my 1070, 1060, 2x970, and r9-290 mining for me, and with a bit of downtime thrown in there I am at exactly the 3 month mark, and I've accumulated ~.07BTC worth ~$725usd... so the cards I bought 3 months ago have almost hit their ROI already :)

I'm having fun with this so I ordered a rackmount case for 6GPU's and a mobo, cpu, ram, 1200w psu, etc, and will be putting a 6 x 1070 rig upstairs at work, so no electricity cost :) Selling some random crap in my life that just sits there to fund this, hopefully making myself some money!

I am buying and holding, because who knows what the Crypto market is going to be like, I don't think it's a flash in the pan thing that will be gone and unmineable in 2 years, I think we're still pretty well in the infancy of the whole crypto market, perhaps BTC will have some competition coming up, who knows!

basically everything i bought 3mnths ago with 6mnth ROI expectations have now ROI'd for me as well. I recently dropped another $4k on expansion. I really hope that ROI's in 3mnths. snowball has been doing great. It took a while to get going but once you're playing with house money you might as well keep playing.
