D-Link 825 disconnecting?

I've been having intermittent issues with my 4 year old D-Link 655 router. it has occurred multiple times in the past 2 weeks where I'm playing a game (League of Legends or Path of Exile) and I get disconnected.

I check the web browser and no internet. This is with a wired Cat6 connection.
The other computers on the network also lose internet access and I have to unplug the power from the router to get it working again.

is it common for routers to die? I'm not downloading anything when it locks up and I don't have to reset the modem, just the router.

It is common and very possible that your router is starting to die, first thing that I would do is re-flash the firmware on the device (or update it to the latest version) and let it run for a few days.

If that that point you are still seeing the issues, I would say your router has packed it in.
