Anyone knows and/or recommend Cybertron servers ?

I am trying to build a cheap, low cost lab with GNS3. My plan is to build a ''router'' server.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2543172&Sku=C122-12570

I found this very cheap, considering that it has all the hardware included.

I am following theses posts, but I don't want 4 X 4 NICs PCI cards. I will add one 4 NICs PCI card.

I will probably recycle this server in a vyatta, pfsense, untangle box for others test purposes.

Thanks :)

4port pci-x card will be slow, you really want to do that ? btw the server looks like a cheap pos with cheap crap inside..

Thats why I am asking if someone knows Cybertron, it seems that there is not that much reviews. Usually, I got with Supermicro

I was planning on writing something... nicer... but similar to this. It's a 4U server, do you really need something that large and potentially power-hungry?

I recently built a firewall/server machine with dual NIC utilizing the Intel Q77 chipset (some of the Q77's have a dual-gigabit NIC option on them, such as the one I purchased.) I'm not sure how nice this will play with GNS3, but even if it doesn't purchasing a cheap H67/H77 board with an Intel Pentium G-series processor (G860/G870) shouldn't run you much over $120-$130. Get a cheap box+PSU combo, use the stock heat sink, use $30-$35 worth of RAM (2x4GB), stick a $18 DVD writer and a cheap HDD in it and you have a working box, minus however many NICs you decide you want.

it's just a big case with a CHEAP CHEAP regular pc board inside, it's not even a server grade board.. Just has to remember a pci-x nic is going to be dog slow :( why does he i wonder need 4 external ports.

I was browsing fore more hardware and this one made me laugh.

For the PS/2 connectors, they put a PlayStation 2 logo.

I already have a rack for other equipment that I use. I was not browsing for a particular U size, and I was more interested in the brand than the actual server. I might give Cybertron a try, perhaps not the server I listed in the initial post.

With a GNS3 lab, lets say that you have a computer with 4 x 4 NICs. Well you can bind 16 routers with GNS3, add 3-4 real l3 switches, and you have a full CCIE, lab.

Its a lab, so I don't need full speed, just full functionality.

I was interested to test with just 1 4 NICs card, to see interconnectivity with my current lab which is similar, I build something 2 years ago for my ccna, with scrap I salvaged from my work,

Like i said, CHEAP desktop board in a server class case, you might have more problems than its worth. but hey, it's your wasted time and money not ours :p

Yeah, prehaps it will bring me more trouble than its worth. If it breaks i will start a thread and we will fix it toghether ;)

Or perhaps I will put somewhere in the house to impress people when I make a party.

PCI-X is hardly slow. Just outdated.

maybe i should take a screen shot of our conversation last year about me buying one and you saying don't bother because they are slow etc etc ? I'm pretty sure i have ALL that saved..

I can't find that in any of my logs, but if you can, go ahead. It was probably in reference to using a PCI-X card in a PCI slot, a card that could potentially require more throughput, or multiple devices on the same bus. For quad gigabit ethernet, it is sufficient. In terms of throughput it's similar to PCIe x4.

it was talking about throwing a pci-x into a pci slot, I GUARANTEE the server the OP is looking at doesn't have a pci-x slot, not in a desktop cheap board. So yet again, it's a waste of money for the op to buy and use.

If it's going in a PCI slot, then that would indeed be a poor choice. PCIe NICs aren't much more than PCI-X ones and can be had for under $100 if you shop around on eBay.

if we're going to be all cheap on this project, why not just a pair of intel PCI-E dual port cards. They're all over fleabay for $35-ish.

The more I see the specs, the more i am convinced I will build something on my own, prehaps I will get a few more years of it, if I decide to get something more entreprise grade. Thanks for the advice to all !
