I recently cut off the second connector on an ide cable because I wasn't using it... after attempting to use my cdrom on this same cable it wouldn't work .... the drive was configured as master and the bios was set for cable select on that ide channel...

is is even possible to snip cables like this.... and what would i need to do to make the drive work as master using that cable

it will work, however you probbably crossed some of the wires cutting them, i would suggest using a really sharp razor and cutting it on some wodd flat up against the ide header

Cutting off the second connector has worked for me in the past. As for your CD-ROM drive, does it show up during the boot sequence (when the names and locations of the drives are flashed on the screen briefly)? If so, then the problem lies in Windows. If your CD-ROM doesn't show at all, confirm that the jumpers on the back of the drive are set to Master, not cable select. Follow that up with a check in the BIOS to make sure that the CD-ROM is set as Master. If you are still are having trouble, you must have done something wrong with the cable, and you should try a new one.

there are no crossed wires that i can see ... i still cut it closer just now... and same issue

I've used a razor in the past on epia projects to shorten the cables, if you want remove the 40/80pin connector and move it down more and try to recut it, i had no problems with this, good luck!
