I am considering building a new desk, and am curious about a few things. If this is covered in previous threads, I couldn't find them.
The first, and most expensive idea I have involves rackmount storage beneath the desk. 18U racks or cabinets should be about the correct height (~28"), if a wood surface was laid across them. Knowing that the racks could become expensive, I may end up just using joists to attach wood panels in T or L shapes to serve as supports for the desk surface.
Anyway, now, on to the questions.

- Has anyone heard of or put together something similar with the racks? How did it work?
- I am watching eBay & will be visiting my local Graybar; does anyone else have suggestions for inexpensive sources of cabinets or racks?
- What cuts (thickness, etc.) of wood would you recommend for the supports & desk surface?
- Any experience/suggestions regarding painting vs. sanding the wood?

Thanks a lot... I plan on running a little log on whatever I end up deciding to do.
