I am considering building a new desk, and am curious about a few things. If this is covered in previous threads, I couldn't find them.

The first, and most expensive idea I have involves rackmount storage beneath the desk. 18U racks or cabinets should be about the correct height (~28"), if a wood surface was laid across them. Knowing that the racks could become expensive, I may end up just using joists to attach wood panels in T or L shapes to serve as supports for the desk surface.

Anyway, now, on to the questions.
  1. Has anyone heard of or put together something similar with the racks? How did it work?
  2. I am watching eBay & will be visiting my local Graybar; does anyone else have suggestions for inexpensive sources of cabinets or racks?
  3. What cuts (thickness, etc.) of wood would you recommend for the supports & desk surface?
  4. Any experience/suggestions regarding painting vs. sanding the wood?
    [/list=1]
Thanks a lot... I plan on running a little log on whatever I end up deciding to do.

Looking at your description, I see you want a rack or something similar.

I have a half height rack that you might want to consider.

Its 37.5 inches high (without the castors on it).

Interested in it?

Middle Atlantic makes desks like you're looking for. I have one, it's great.

you can make your own 19" cabinets... they sell the metal part with all the screw holes etc at a few places, like guitar center...

just make a strong wood/metal cabinet... no reason you cant integrate it into your desk

With wood....the base of the desk I am building is made with 2X3's, 2X4's just look kinda bulka and not very nice looking. The top is a piece of plywood, but not the typical plywood. It is some special stuff that I found at Home Depot. It is hard as shit...and looks nice with a stain. I will let you know what I used. Also, I was going to build cabinets underneath it when I was first deciding on what to do, but changed my mind due to weight concerns.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Building the cabinets myself is something to think about...

I'm looking forward to hearing about the ply, CFodder.
