Ive been reading alot on the board here about all the custom cable sleeving and most apply only to the PSU. The tools you need to remove molex connectors and Aux connectors etc. etc. After seeing the post on rate your cables and Earms excellent job, especially on the custom IDE cables, I would like to make my own custom IDE cables but have not been able to find any info, here or on retailer websites, on how to make these or the tools needed to disconnect the IDE connectors from the cable. Can you use the same tools for the that you would on a PSU kit to remove the IDE cables? and is it very hard to do? Im fairly new at modding and cutting the IDE cables to custom lengths and then reconnectins them seems like it would be a fairly difficult job, but it just looks so damn good. Damn you Earm!

You have to use a pointy implement like a jeweler's scredriver or needle-nose pliers to remove the connector housing. Be careful that you don't slip and jab yourself, but otherwise, it's a pretty simple process. Also, when repositioning the connector, make sure that the insulation displacement blades cut into the appropriate wire. With 80-conductor cable, you need to take extra care to make sure you align it properly. Finally, use a solid flat object to firmly squeeze the retention bar into place, otherwise you could risk a loose connection, which is not cool for anything related to data lines.

Kinda pointless to do 80 pin cables, since after cutting it 40 of the pins will be useless. Unless you're talking about sleeving a shielded rounded cable and not rounding one yourself.

Why remove the conectors? chances are the sleeving will expand to a size more than large enough to slide the connector through on its side.

cause every other pin shields the wires from interference, and if they aren't positioned correctly it won't work?

I think the 40 normal wires have to be lined up with the grounded ones. If you round a cable yourself they won't be lined up.

Woah! Im more confused now than I was before. I would like to cut them shorter so there wont be so much cable hanging about. Anyone else have an idea on how this can be done?

If that confuses you, then I think you'd better just fold the cable away. Use a firm straightedge and make neat folds, then secure with a rubber band or some sort of clip.
