Curious Idea

This may sound like a strange question but is it possible to set up a LAN distributed computing network? The idea I am having is to get a couple of slow boxen together (400mhz, etc..) and have them all work on the same work unit? It this at all possible or am I just dreaming.

the closest you could come is running them all with a bunch of timeless WUs - 1 each. this has been looked at before and isn't really practical. folding is already basically set up this way, it can't really be broken down any more.

You'd probably be better off with either Overclockix or my folding distro; it is definitely possible to set up a server, but it doesn't make a good first project.

Do the machines have PXE capable cards? Probably not, but it might be a decent investment. (Jeeez, does nobody sell these anymore? I looked around for 10 minutes and couldn't find any.) No worries, there's a program called Etherboot which lets you do the same thing from a floppy. It's linked in the thread about my distro. No hard drives needed is a plus, but floppies required is a pain in the butt, I know.
