So, for the heck of top tier video cards (regardless of game play style), is a GTX 780 Ti worth the cost of about $100 more than an R9 290x ($639 vs. $539 - before tax)? Or is the GTX 780 at under $500 a better choice?

Found some open box items that are interesting.
 
Depends on the game you play, what settings, resolution and so on.

Best buy atm is GTX780, or if you find for normal or close to normal some custom 290.
 
I don't think the 780 ti is worth $100 more than the 290X. As psyside said though, the 780 or a 290 (nonX) at/near msrp are the best values.
