Hey,

What are the pros and cons are of CRTs and LCDs.
I'm trying to decide what to go for.....
 
LCDs, compared to (high quality) CRTs are sharper, brighter and, well, thinner. But they generally have worse contrast, delay, viewing angles and colors and can have some other odd effects. There are several different LCD panel technologies, and some are as good or nearly as good as CRTs in some of these aspects. Some, like the new Viewsonic VP191, are good in all of them.
 
If you aren't a hardcore gamer and don't do color critical work on your computer then LCD is the better choice IMO. That's not to say all LCDs suck for gaming and colors. Newer LCDs are good enough to satisfy most people.

Apart from the obvious space saving, lower power consumption and less heat, the main benefits of LCDs compared to CRTs are sharpness, brightness, perfect geometry, no flicker and no convergence and focus issues in corners that even high quality CRTs suffer from.

Disadvantages are slower response time (not really a problem anymore with new fast panels), viewing angles (again, not a problem on VA and IPS panels), dead pixels and color reproduction, although some panels are almost as good as a high quality CRT when it comes to colors.
 
I switch bewteen a Dell 17" Ultrasharp LCD at work and a gateway VX720 "17" flat CRT at home. IMHO, the LCD deosn't even come close to the CRT for color reproduction and especially the contrast. AS long as i play games on my home computer, i would never be willing to give up my CRT.
 
I'm waiting for 'once you go with LCD you'll never go back to CRT.' I'm sure it will be coming shortly. :p

i disagree...if ur a true hardcore gamer...CRT all the way.
 
How about all those people who used to use crappy cheap shadow mask crts, to them, lcd's are like looking into paradise. I used to be amazed by how many people paired up $2000 rigs with shitty 15" and 17" crt's :rolleyes:, with a $2000 gaming rig, you can't blame it on money.

Nowadays though it's whatever floats your boat, since lcd's have gotten better. I still favor crt's for their ability to run any resolution and their 20,000:1 contrast ratio. Most people who complain about geometry either had a shitty quality crt or a defected one imho ;) (or were ultraaaa-picky)

You're going to need a really expensive LCD to beat out my 21" Trinitron CRT.
 
I switch over to LCD, with a small room to fit my computer equipment in, this one is great computer monitor and I'll never go back to a CRT monitor again. I do video editing, play games and some photoshop and have zero problems and the colors are fantastic.

Computer Setup
 
Had a 17inch CRT used to think nothing could beat it, great picture quality, geometry was pretty good and it wasnt TOO heavy, then i got my LD90+ and ive never looked back. I spend about 85% of the time in games like CS:S, UT04, Tribes and BF2 and ghosting isnt a issue to me. Give a moden LCD a shot and see how it effects your gameplay, CRT's arnt going anywhere but responce time is less of a issue then it was before. Only time i notice ghosting is in real fast Deathmatch games in UT04.
 
I play LOTS of games. and my LCD works perfectly. its a 19 inch 12 ms Sceptre. It also works better for web surfing, photoshop, everything.
 
I don't think there can be any blanket statements like "everyone should use LCD" or "CRTs are always better for people". There are people who can notice even the slightest lag on any LCD, and there are people who will get headaches from a CRT in minutes. If a certain type of monitor works perfectly for one person, it might not for someone else.
 
Good CRTs can be had for less than good LCDs. Nothing against either one, pricing just tends downwards on CRTs since the tech is much older (among other factors).
 
LCD pros:
1) Fixed pixel, no geometry issues
2) Very light
3) Desk space friendly
4) Text readibility at 1600 lines and > superior to CRTs
5) Energy efficient compared to CRTs
6) Panels are kewl!

LCD cons:
1) Poor black resolution (in general)
2) Fixed native resolution
3) Can't keep up with fast games for many users
4) Be prepared for some dead pixels and backlighting

CRT pros:
1) Dial up any resolution you want
2) Superior blacks (Doom3!!!!!!!)
3) No lag/ghosting issues
4) Accurate color rendition

CRT cons:
1) Big/heavy
2) Energy inefficient
3) Runs hotter than LCDs
4) Geometry takes some tweaking

Regarding the eye issue, I returned a Dell 2001fp because it was hard on my eyes....too bright and text too small. So I ain't buying any of the 'LCD easier on the eyes' business.

I'm sure I'm missing some but that's all I can think of right now.
(BTW, I own a NEC FE2111sb).
 
I have a Dell 2001fp, which i "upgraded" to from a 21" Trinitron. I've started thinking it was more of a lateral move lately. It's excellent for work (coding), web, static type stuff. It's been pretty good for gaming for the most part. Doom III is too bright (i expected that), but Painkiller is great, JK:A is good, and WC III plays just fine. I recently put in XWing:Alliance (old, yeah yeah), and discovered that this monitor is really not fit for it. It may be the black background and light colored ships, but the ghosting is much more noticable than in Painkiller, and is affecting gameplay. All the other FPSs i've tried were fine.

I'm considering getting a high quality 19" short-neck that i can game on. Now i just need to get a couple of swing arms mounted so i can move them around easily... :D
 
Well Im still on the CRT and, at this point dont plan on going to LCD. Mostly due to the price hit. LCDs dont offer enough advantage to justify their higher price, at this point. My cousin has a Sony and, I wasnt impressed by it at all. I would love to see the LCDs perform as well as, my CRT but, they dont. So I will stay with it for awhile. Maybe they will come up with something better than both. That would be even better yet.
 
Sorry I took so long to get back to you guys.....

I guess I should tell you a bit more about my needs......

This computer is used primarily for gaming (UT2004, CS:S, etc). However, I would like something that is also easy on the eyes, especially when staring at word docs for several hours. I have never really had a good CRT. The one I'm using now is a crappy Envision 17".
As for budget, I would like to stay below 300 (preferably more like 250). And the computer this monitor will be used for is in my sig. :D
