I saw a post on craigslist selling an old Sony E540 for $25. I have only been gaming on LCDs for the past seven years and I'm starting to get fed up with the input lag, response time, ghosting etc. Lately I've been watching Quake Live replays and I keep thinking to myself that the kind of rail gun shots they pull off would be impossible on an LCD.

Do you think it's worth driving an hour to get this for gaming?

The hardware should be the last thing you blame, but an hour in the car and 25 bucks is a pretty cheap experiment. I keep my 21" Trinitron around for when I'm doing a lot of hours in FPS games. The performance is superior.

I'm not blaming the hardware...in fact I haven't even played Quake Live or any FPS for the last two years. Picture quality would be the main reason I'd go back to CRT.

I'm just saying I've seen replays where someone will peak around a corner for a few frames, tops, and rail someone from across the map. There's no possible way you could accomplish that on a typical LCD unless you literally clicked the mouse before you visibly went around the corner.

The cost of a 120Hz LCD is >>>>>> than the cost of a used CRT. Even at 120Hz, there is still ghosting. There are also less accurate colors, less deeper blacks, etc...

Yet they probably ARE using LCDs. Just ones with shitty color but no input lag or noticeable ghosting.

That said, a CRT has a number of benefits and that's a pretty good deal.
