Crossfire vs Single with double memory?

I currently have a Samsung T260 and a Samsung T260HD. I'm hoping to get another T260 when I get any extra spending cash, for my eyefinity setup. So, three monitors running 1920 x 1200 comes to 5760 x 1200.
I currently have a HIS Radeon HD 6850 IceQ Turbo X, which has 1GB of Memory. I don't know if this would perform well in-game. I hope to upgrade somehow in the future. I had been considering getting a second 6850 to crossfire, but i was just wondering if I'll be better suited to sell this one and get a single 6850/6870 with 2GB of memory. Not sure if I'm making this up or I actually read it somewhere, but isn't more memory better for the larger resolution?

PS: on a tight budget ;)
 
I have a T260HD when the time comes if you want one. Whats your budget and what kind of games are you looking to play? You are correct, more vram does help with larger resolutions.

How much do you think you'll want for the T260 if you do want to get rid of so i can start planning. I'm looking at the $150 range as per GPU. I'm currently playing Dirt3. My license for LiveForSpeed is probably expired now, but i might renew. I'd like to try F1 2011 if anyone has a key they'd like to get rid off. My Microsoft flight simulator X is laying around here somewhere. I'm considering trying BF3 and Mass Effect 3 when they get a lot cheaper than they are right now.
 
Not really sure. I have the one with the tv tuner. It was $500 new a couple years ago but just shoot me a price in a pm of what you think is fair.

I would either pick up another 6850 or sell your 6850 and look into droping a little more money and getting a 7870 or 7950. You can get both for under $400 right now. 7950 is the better value. Most games 6850 1GB crossfire would be good but at that res and these newer games are really going to be limited by your vram. Plus single card drivers are way better ha.

I mean I was really hoping not to be spending that much.

BTW, if i got the 6870 couldn't i crossfire it with my current 6850? (that's assuming I'm able to come up with that amount without selling the 6850). If I can crossfire, would there be compatibility issues because they have different memory amounts? If I can crossfire, would the 6870 only be using 1GB because it has to mirror the second card?
 
If you get another 6850 its going to be well above the 6950 or 6870 with 2 GB it will also be the cheapest route. Im just not sure how the vram will handle that res. Hopefully someone else can chime in on this...

If you got a 6870 and put it in xfire with the 6850 it would run at 1 GB and it would act like a 6850 from what I understand. Wouldnt be worth the extra money.
 
I should be getting my third T260 delivered tomorrow. I think I'm going to sell my 6850 and get a 2GB 6950 that I can unlock to 6970. I'm hoping that should be enough. Going to start looking through the For Sale thread for one.
 
That resolution is not going to trouble the VRAM, if no anti-aliasing is used. The real problem is that newer games will quickly exhaust your texture memory reserves. I keep seeing people talking about AA and rez as the determining factors for VRAM usage. They are a factor. If you have enough to cover your monitor and AA needs now, only a hardware upgrade will change them. Textures, on the other hand will always increase. I'm guessing here, but once graphics moves fully to real-time ray tracing, the ONLY thing that will matter is buffered frames, and textures, as far as VRAM is concerned.
 
Oh, and, the 1GB per card will probably rule out alternate frame rendering, and any antialiasing at all.

I won't buy a 1GB card, even for my 10 yr old. We have 4 PCs we maintain for gaming. I have not bought a 1GB card in over 3 years.
