Crossfire setup running at x2?

Guys,

I recently upgraded from a 1 X 5870 to 2 X 6950 in XFire on an Asus Sabertooth X58 with an i7 950.

All the games lag pretty bad, and then I realized that my PCI-e Link Width was only x2 instead of x16, according to CPU-Z.

How can I fix that? I looked in the BIOS and could not find anything. Is this normal?

Any help will be appreciated.

Are you using the top two slots? I ask because the third PCIe slot is x4 on that board so. So you essentially have to run it on the top two, which sucks for heat unless you have them watercooled.
 
It's a P5B Deluxe, I'm not surprised the cards lag, that board is absolutely ancient...
 
Indeed on many an X58 board the position of the GPU determines the PCI-e speed.

Check your manual and GPU position.

To get 16x in both slots I would bet slot #1 and 2 .

In looking at the picture on newegg, you'll need to put the GPUs in the light tan slots.
Fortunately there's a legacy PCI slot between them so your cards have some space to breathe.:D

Don't forget to link your GPUs together with the crossfire bridge.;)
 
With dual slot video cards (the norm) there is literally none. The first video card is basically pressed up against the back of the second, gasping for air but getting nothing but stale heat from the second. That PCI slot spacing was deceiving.
 
A lot of X58 boards have very poor slot spacing. I would never recommend crossfire using slots with only a single gap between unless you're using stock coolers (and can live with the racket of 100% fan speed on a geforce, or 60%+ on a radeon). With non-reference cards, even at max speed you will push 110C with most cards in such systems.

You're correct. It looks like a bit more space. Come to think of it my Rampage III Formula is just the same. I forgot all about that. My 6950s were back to back to back.....and had to run at 65% to stay cool, except for the bottom card.

I went for watercooling, I couldn't take the noise after a while.:D
 
Guys, sorry for the delay. I do have both cards attached to the top 2 slots (x16) slots.

What else could the problem be?

I'd remove and replace the GPUs.
Do it one at a time and place the gpu in the top slot.
See what registers there using one, then two cards.
Uninstall and reinstall CPU-z
Uninstall and reinstall your chipset drivers and or update them.

I can't think of anything else.

No problem with the CPU, right?

Maybe you got a bum board.....??
