So my twin brother installed BF3 but he's getting poor performance out of his radeon 3870. His rig is about 4 years old and to my knowledge his cpu is a Phenom dual-core, I think of the first generation. He has a MSI motherboard that supports crossfire.

My question is, should he get a faster AMD card and bother with crossfire? I thought I read somewhere long ago that Crossfire is fine for using cards of wildly different performance levels, unlike SLI. Is that true? Or should he get the fastest card he can afford and forget about Crossfire?

There are some combinatiions of cards that CAN be used in CrossfireX, that differ from SLi.

Your chart is about 1/3 down the page, it's small print and I dont see the 3800 series on there, but you get the picture.

BTW, I googled HD 3800 CrossfireX combinations.............:eek: to get your screenshot there.

My advice............dump the 3870 and buy a 2GB 6950, it will bash any combination you could hope for in the 3800 series with Crossfire.:D

Thanks for your input, I came to the same conclusion after looking more into the matter and already informed my brother.
