Crossfire Card Matching

Yup works just fine! All my CFX rigs are miss-matched pairs. A Sapphire 5850 with a Powercolor 5850 (that is radically different looking). That same XFX 5770 in your post with a tiny Powercolor 5770. I even had a 4870-512mb with a 4850-512mb...worked out great!! Overclocked the 4850 to 4870 speeds (on the GPU of course, the RAM would never make it, but I did max out the little DDR3 modules) AMD cards are pretty darn awesome. I wish nVidia was as flexible.
 
Just note that you are looking at having cards with 2 different fan designs. The dual card design hits the GPU with air and then the hot air blows back into the case. The reference design sucks air into the sleeve and then blows it out the back of your case. You may want to monitor temps and see which setup will work best for the airflow in your case... with my CF 6950s I have the dual fan card on the bottom as I was worried it my mess with airflow in the middle of my case, but your mileage may vary.

Also, with running this setup you are almost running into the situation where a single card like the 6870, would likely offer very similar (or perhaps better) performance to CF 5770s. You can find deals on 6870 that are close to 150$ after rebate, so I think you may be better served by ordering a 6870 and then selling your card. You also would not have to deal with crossfire issues with the 5770s, and you could always go crossfire 6870 down the road for much better performance.

2x 5770's is about as fast as a 5870, 2x 5770's is a pretty good idea, I don't have a 6870 to compare it to, but I do have a GTX460 @GTX560 speeds (about equal to a 6870) and the 5770 CFX is usually faster than it.

I agree... 2 5770s may have a slight edge. But I would venture than in many games a 6870 may also be faster. Should be able to get 70$ or more for a used 5770 on ebay so that turns out to be a cheaper setup that could scale upwards far better by going CF 6870 in the future.

But obviously if OP is set on going 5770 CF it'll be fine and will certainly play most games well.
