Hi. A few years ago I built myself a pre-XP AMD Athlon PC. I picked up a few recommendations from the heatsink roundup from this site (very handy comparison, by the way) and finished up with a respectably cool 40C under load for a 1.4GHz.
I was more interested in overclocking an even older PC so I removed Motherboard Monitor from this one and never looked back.
Recently I've been having stability issues in Windows 2000. It was crashing overnight when I wasn't doing anything, I have a file on a NTFS partition that I cannot delete for some reason, a SCSI card that refuses to work but tries to reinstall it's drivers all the time, I get 30 second pauses anytime a sound channel tries to open, and every so often I'll get a halt error. I dare not even try to run Prime95.
MM is reinstalled and now I find that my temp under idle is 55C! It raised about 15 degrees in nearly three years. I know it's summer but my room isn't 15 degrees higher. This leads me to believe that the problems I'm having are temp related. I've considered the possibility that Windows is crapping out and needs a fresh reinstallation, but it's a whole lot of work and it doesn't solve my creeping temp problem.

Any ideas? I've got a ThermalRight SK-6 and a 7K Delta on it, and I had originally applied Arctic Silver (original). I havn't had to remove the HSF from the chip ever so I know I didn't just all of a sudden screw up the installation. Any help greatly appreciated.
 
Have you cleaned out all the accumulated duct from between the heatsink fins and under the fan? this morning i cleaned out my sk-7 and it was full off dust stopping air getting betweent the fins, and its only been in the computer since easter! A fresh application of arctic silver might be a good idea too if its been installed for a few years.
And that file that wont delete- i have that sometimes if a file isnt complete and explorer tries getting the information for properties- it sends cpu usage to 100% and screws over ure computer when you go into the folder its in. Try downloading a prgram called eraser from here - it can delete anything :)
 
Hey, thanks. Even with the filters on all my intake fans this thing looked like a mound of dirt. :)

Yeah definately clean up all the dirt on fans/heatsink....

Reapplying some artic silver or your thermal grease of choice wouldn't hurt either.

I was going to mention that, if you used Artic Silver from the 1.4 Athalon era it's time for a reapplication.
