I've been using these for a while now with windows 2k with sub gilmore amp from MisterX. I recently formatted and put on winxp and now my audio sounds really shitty. Bass is really distorted and so is the high treble.

Using Sennheiser HD 280 Pros.

What could be causing this?

I have the same Sennheiser headphones, SB soundcard, and using Xp without problem. However, I don't share any of your other componets..so.

I did think that SB 5.1 worked a little better on Win 2K though. Just bringing-up the Player in XP for instance, well it just hangs there for awhile. And Hangs. I also use the drivers on the Cd that came with SB and not the ones from Win Update, as I had issues with those.

Beyond that, the sound isn't distorted in any way. I've had mine connected to the Yamaha TSS-1 Home Theater Sound System 5.1's for a couple of years.

Possibly you just need to adjust and re-adjust your settings under Xp until you get back to the sound quilty you liked under 2K.

THat's how I have it configed. Just about the same in win2k. Anything I'm doing wrong?
 
Have you got another soundcard that you can drop in? Perhaps switching to integrated sound? Perhaps your soundcard is to blame.

If so, consider yourself lucky. The SBL is really a POS. There are better cards that are availible for not too much money. For strictly headphone listening, the Chaintech AV-710 is a good deal. I picked up a Newegg refurb for $16. I listening to it right now with a pair of Ultrasone HFI-650 driven by a MisterX PiMeta. 'Tis 96KHz/24bit audio binaural heaven. Quite a signifigant upgrade for my work computer's integrated Intel sound.
 
Have you gotten the latest XP drivers from Creative's site? They have had some bugs in the past.

P.S. What motherboard/processor are you using?

The thing with sound blaster cards is they distort heavily at 100% volume. Turn the master volume down to about 60% or so and you should be fine. I get HORRIBLE distortion when i have the creative master volume at 100%, especially if i have adjusted the bass or trebble settings as you have. :D
