i was thinking to my self today
what if i take out all the componets in my laptop and buy a case and install the mobo and all those those stuff in the case....will this really work?
i am, just taking the mobo out, installing into case. will this work? i might do this if it is possible.... did anyone ever try it?

Well, the components might technically work outside of the laptop itself, but, remember the laptop has some "switches" (basically momentary toggle switches that get held down or released) to detect several things such as when the panel is opened/closed. However, I SERIOUSLY doubt it will do any semblance of fitting inside your actual PC case probably, unless it's much more modern than what I'm certainly used to, and, even then probably not likely in most cases. (Those mobile bartons work in a desktop mb, so this leads me to believe that it could theoretically be possible that some lazy manufacturers might basically use a template of a desktop mb, with the screwholes in the same places and that sort of thing.)

Now, if you're just really bored, you could probably get away with screwing them into a board or something. I should warn you though. You'd best be considering that laptop next to disposable, because one screwup in the right place can do some serious damage potentially. They weren't made to be taken apart by non-certified people.

you might be able to pull it off, but why  laptops are so compact and nice and stuff

As a more permanent situation when you never move that laptop. Such as if the person has no desktop pc for the time being or something of that nature. If the laptop were good enough, one might not be in any big hurry to get a desktop pc (though it can be said that they lag behind in video technology so horribly it's not even funny.)

BTW, I just remembered. They used to very commonly make what they called docking stations where you just pushed in the laptop and it connected up stuff like the video/etc. It's much more rare now, but, I'm sure they probably still make a few. Naturally heat might be an issue, I'm not sure. (I always worry about heat with my laptop. I have NEVER waited for it to get hot enough for the fan to come on automatically -- which it supposedly will do, but, I let it get pretty darned hot before I couldn't wait longer -- I set a program to start the fan on bootup.)

You'll never find a motherboard from a laptop that will simply screw into a traditional PC chassis...never. Then again, if you build or modify a case that accomodates for the unique screw mounting locations of your motherboard, I don't foresee any further issues. You would just have to pay special attention to the handling of the components, minimizing electrostatic discharget, etc. as you would (or should) with the components of a desktop PC.

Potentially, you could make a smaller desktop than you normally could.

why would anyone want to do this?
You've seen the crappy NES mods... You could potentially make a perfect and VERY CLEAN one. Laptop drive by default willl fit, and so will a Slimline DVD-ROM. I was thinking about this too. Especially if the Laptop is busted (i.e. someone broke the screen or something) and you have to plug it into a monitor anyways.

Somehow I'm thinking he want to put a laptop into a standard case...

If your going the whole itsy-bitys-tinny- modded case route, this may be a good idea. Otherwise... Why?

I don't see why you would wanna try that but hey....I bet someone told that to Mashie and CrimsonSkye too...so give it a shot dude.

BTW--Most laptops now from the major OEM's (Dell, HP, Gateway) still have docking stations or port replicators. I sell em everyday. ;)
