Crashing Issues - Getting Desperate

ok well this is a bit of a tough one for me to figure out, so i'm coming to all of you.

I'm running:

barton 2500+ @stock w/ thermaltake hsf
radeon 9700pro
sb live
abit nf7-s 2.0
antec trueblue 350w ps
WD 80gb ata hd

my problem is this: my computer almost never freezes when i'm around, not during games or anything cpu intensive where heat levels would increase ( i stay at around 55c under load) However it freezes when i leave the computer idling at the desktop. Sometimes the pc stays alive for a few hours, sometimes 20 minutes, it seems very random. Anywhoo, i'm just trying to get some opinions on the matter. I can't figure out for the life of me why it's locking up... (also, sometimes when the pc locks up the hard drive light stays solid, however this is not always the case. Not sure if that helps)

check your power settings and screen saver stuff, i know when my computers screen saver goes on it freezes for a second or 2, same when it goes off.

hmm, if there is a way, like if you have room, put a case fan in there, or 2.

HD space, how much are you using out of that 80? and is it NTFS ?

run adaware and check for spyware, some of that crap slows up computers. and do a disk cleanup, or a defrag.

other than that, i don't know what else to tell ya. Just trying to help
 
Could be a powesaving feature going bonkers, you may want to for testing reasons turn that off, and llike already said turn off your screensaver.
 
if you have sleep mode or hibernate enabled
that "could" cause windows to freeze while trying to blank out, also check your cpu idle settings, sometimes if you have unknown spyware or whatever running in the backround and your cpu tries to idle while the "Spyware" begins to run windows could get confused and freeze up (personal xperience).
Go into your bios and if you feel like it u could reset your settings>()
 
Well, i am 100% sure i don't have any spyware, i've formatted multiple times and even when the drive is almost empty the same symptoms come up (yes, the drive is ntfs). I've tried searching around for any hibernate / powersaving settings but to be honest it doesn't seem to do anything (at least the windows options.) I've disabled hibernation, and i'm set to an always on config in the power schemes section.

Also about cooling, i've had up to 5 fans in there, it lowers temps a little bit but it is too loud and the same things still happen.

Really at a loss here.
 
Download memtest86 and run it for several hours. Just a stab in the dark, but we don't have much to go on...

Have you checked your system logs? Anything in there jump out at you?
 
Same thing been happening to me with my new PC I just recently built with the same video card that was in my old pc. (ATI Radeon 9700 Pro) - Never crashes when I'm around but always crashed within a few hours of idling. I traced it down to the ATI VPU Recoverer. I uninstalled the Catalyst 4.3 drivers and reinstalled the same 4.3 (re-downloaded also) and it havent happened for about two weeks.

I suspect it was due to me installing the drivers right when I built it and before I downloaded the XP SP1.

well, i ran memtest86 for a few hours, no errors foudn so i think my ram is okay. Reinstalled the catalyst drivers, hope that will help with my problem. Thanks alot for everyones input.

Am I the only one that read he stays at about 56C "under-load"?

Sounds like you got a heat problem?
 
the computer never craps out on me at times when heat would be an issue, also it's an abit mobo and i've heard those report temps high....


no crashes yet, going steady.
 
freezing issues are still there, not sure what's going on. Anyway, any more help would be helpful.

If it crashes, and if windows made a minidump file, have you tried analyzing it?
