CPU - Vid Card question...

whats the low end point that a CPU would not be holding back a new generation (6800, x800) vid card?

im trying to decide between upgrading my girlfriends present PC or getting a new one, i would much prefer to be able to jsut upgrade what she has, which is:

amd 1800xp athlon
1gig pc2100 ram
9500pro vid card.

due to the motherboard constraints (asus vn266-vm) i cant go higher than pc2100 ram, nor can i go higher than a 2600xp athlon cpu. i'd like to throw in a 6800gt, but how badly would the 1800xp be bottlenecking the card, and how bad would a 2600xp be bottlenecking it? would the slower ram affect it as well?

i can get the 2600xp chip and a 6800gt for around $450. going the route of building a new pc from scratch is going to cost me around $1200 and leave me with a 9800pro card instead of the 6800gt, so upgrading is far more attractive, IF the 6800gt isnt severe overkill.
 
I tried to look up your MB on the Asus side, but couldn't find anything with that name (should be A7xxxx ). Make sure that MB can handle the AGP voltage, somewhere in there they changed the specs for the AGP slot and older boards might not be able to handle the 6800 GT specs. I also think you will be CPU limited in nearly all games that take advantage of the 6800.
But then, you're talking a $400 card on a $50 (today's prices) board/CPU. For $500 you can get a P4 2.4, a 865 chipset and a 6800 nu; probably a much more usefull upgrade than the 6800 GT in that old combo.

a7n266-vm is the one i meant.
