CPU running super HOT!!

I have a friend and he is running a p4 3ghz with a stock fan and heatsink it is running at 44c I have a amd64 on stock and it runs at 30c I am thinking something is wrong I told him to look at getting a Thermal Right SLK948U and a vantec tornado TD9238H with double ball bearing. I was wondering your opinions on a fan and heatsink for him to get. Thanks for your time
 
vantec tornado's are beasts, honestly, tell him to get some sound proof headphones too... NEVER get that fan unless your going deaf already, or your computer is in another room...

How much CFM do they go by anyway? The Delta's are more worse. I even have a 60 MM Delta (48 or 53 CFM-ish) on an Athlon XP HSF... Ha. Funny.

Oh and um, 44 C is not too bad. My P4 is at around that temps too.

44c is fine, is this under idle or full load, under full load would be great... but it's ok at idle to. Alot of boards give incorrect temp readings. Full specs would help, Motherboard brand/model, idle/load. But he's fine, thats pretty much the norm for those p4s'

44C is only 111F...really not that hot at all. I'd question the accuracy of your 30C temp, though, as that's barely over room temp (86F).
 
I swear ir runs from 30 to 32 degrees for my amd64 3000+ it is wierd. I thought that 40c was bad but I guess not. He does want to get a new fan and heatsink thought what are some good ones to get for p4s??
 
Just be careful he doesn't hit 50C. As I understand it, that's the point P4s begin underclocking. But, yeah, 44C is basically fine. You only do minor damage once you get up to 55 or so, and that's mainly just decreasing a few years off the total lifetime of the thing, which is already quite a few years.

Personally, I found it immensely useful to put a side fan in my case almost perfectly lined up with my CPU. It means that the CPU is more likely to use ambient temperature air instead of mb heated air.

Now, when you want quiet, look for something like this or one of those giant zalman things. This thing is super-quiet (a lot quieter than my case anyway -- they claim about 21dBA I think it was) and uses a ton of thin copper slices for maximum heat dissipation. My CPU seems to stay pretty cool. Also, I recently put one on someone's Athlon XP 2000+ (Palamino) and it seemed to stay well below 50C even with the case temperature around 32C or so.

Oh, and athlon 64s are supposed to run cool from what people say. Knowing that, I sure would be interested to know how the athlon 64 mobiles do...
 
My Athlon 64 3200+ (1mb L2) never exceeds 40 deg C under load. And that's in an ambient temperature of 80 deg F. Stock cooler and fan.

Yeah, but, theoretically a P4 can never hit those temperatures since they will just keep underclocking until they run cool enough.

In fact, you might want to check with a realtime clock program to see if that P4 is running at it's rated speed.

prescotts dont underclock themselves. and on stock cooling it is normal for them to run around 60C. Wich is really hot, but still will run fine.
 
Really? Cool. I was religiously avoiding P4s due to the fact that before you just couldn't rely on them to do what they were made to do without keeping an eye out. After all, just because the temperature is in the ok range, you just couldn't tell that the CPU itself was running correctly.

Well, that and the fact I just love OCing. OCing the FSB and RAM isn't enough, I want multipliers darn it! ^_^

Anyway, I had heard they ran hot, but, 60C? Geez! And this is considered ok? Isn't it bad for a CPU to hit 55? Or does the prescott take more punishment? Either way, I'd personally switch from that stock cooling to something decent pretty darned quickly...

Well, anyway, that proves even moreso that 44C isn't at all "super-hot." Not that it was before. You just can't compare with those Athlon 64s. They run too cool. Heck, that's cooler than you typically get from a mobile XP, but, I haven't heard of anyone NOT ocing a mobile xp to the absolute max, so I can't compare much. ^_^
 
my cpu runs at about 58 celcius

edit: but i did read that some mobos dont read the temps right or something? cause ive been running everything stock and fine for a year before noticing the temp.
 
Yes, many read temperatures incorrectly.

Try installing Motherboard Monitor 5. It has a pretty good database. So most likely if that board is one of those it will be in there (hopefully anyway.) And it would have the compensation already set for you.
 
My Cpu is running a load (in a fairly warm room) at 53. It Idles around 48. this sorta pissed me off because I have a 900u, but it does't want to cool like it used to. One time it maxed out at 24 running prime95 for days.

New to the forums here.

Basically got really scared this morning when I came to see how my video transcoding project was doing. I turned it one before I went to bed. When I got up the ASUSProbe (monitors temp etc) was open and the CPU temp was (and I just double checked the log..) 76' C! And it had been for several hours while I was fast asleep!. I immediately opened the case and cranked up the room AC and the temp gradually fell to a stable 63'C At Idle it runs in the 40's or so. You want to stress a sysem try some video editing!

I am thinking of scrapping the damn ThermalTake Subzero unit in favor of a large HSF combo. I've got a P4 3.2, Asus P4C800e-dlx in a Thermaltake Xaser III VM3000A Skull series case. Not sure what the clearances are going to be like for a monster heat sink. Also not sure about how much current the POTS on the built-in "hardcano" fan controller can handle if I go with a monster like the tornado.

Suggestions??
 
My Athlon 64 3200+ runs about 35 degrees Idle and mid 40's at load with stock cooling. Nothing drastic.
 
someone mentioned the huge zalman heatsinks, I just picked one up today (7000a-cu),
quiet and it cools like a mf...comes with a speed adjuster (fanbus?), much quieter than what I was running (amd retail hsf) and dropped my temps from 57C at idle to mid 30's (barton 2800 @ 2.38ghz)
