All,
I'm beginning to plan the upgrade from my S939 AMD system to an Intel based system. My starting piint is that I'll upgrade to a Penrym CPU and Mobo. However, I am unsure whether I'll be cutting my nose off to spite my face in any way.

In particular, I'm referring to Mobo sockets as I'd like some headroom for CPU upgrades in the future (Nehalem?). Also, on memory, do will Penryn compatible mobos support both DDR2 and DDR3? I may opt to go for DDR2 in the short term.

As you can see I want performance with flexibility...

Nehalem will most likely need a new chipset. While the new AMD CPUs will work on AM2 boards, the added features of the new chips won't work on older boards. Just buy a decently priced board now (~$100), and buy a decently priced one later (around 2yrs or so later, when you're ready for your next upgrade).
 
You can get the gigabyte p35C-ds3r - it supports both ddr2, ddr3. i don't see why anyone would get a ddr3 memory. You can OC the ddr2 and pay far less!
