cpu fan broke!

My cpu fan on my AMD athlon 1.4ghz has begun to sound really bad and the computer freezes up so I assume the fan is broken..
it runs irregular too...

I just wonder if it could be anything else than the fan and if
it's possible to replace it with the fan I got when I bought a p4 3.0ghz ?
.. or do I have to buy a new one =)

any answers will be helpful thanks!
 
Well, I dont know if you have an aftermarket or oem HSF, but if the fan is a standard size..............replace it(ie:40mm,80mm,whatever). Alot of times you can change the fan without touching the heatsink.
 
or get in there with blowjob-in-a-can and clean it out a little... I had one that started to "go bad" and after a good cleaning it kept on going till i replaced it with a different fan some months later...

or just replace it with a standard fan of hte same size.. they are cheap to replace these days..
 
If you can pull the sticker off the top center of the fan you might be able to lube it up a bit after you blow it out with compressed air, then replace the sticker.

Funny, once I used the can-o-air on a HSF, and the fan promptly died after cleaning! It was a minor aggrivation, but I thought it odd.

if you don't hold the fan blades, the compressed air spinning it is really bad for the fan - that could have been your prob

i know, i did it with one of the 60mm fans i had lying around, so much fun.....

.....then i dropped the can cause it got so cold and it landed on my toe, it hurt too......
 
Usually if the fan stops or spins pretty crappy after getting spun really fast by canned air you can fix them.

Just need some good lube and put a couple of drops under the sticker.

WD40 usually doesnt work the best as it will get gummy after awhile again.
