CPU dying? How do you know?

I recently posted a thread about how my CPU seems to be running 10 degrees hotter now and nolonger able to reach the previous overclock because of the extreme heat.

I thought it might've been a problem with my SI-97 heatsink but I still don't know.
Could the CPU be dying? What's the cause of this?

It used to do 2400MHz @ 1.700 vcore rock solid prime stable for more than a year in the mid 40s. Recentely, it's been running in the mid-high 50s and I've checked and remounted my heatsink and all my cooling many times to no avail.

Is the CPU just dying? Recentely, it's been crashing intermittently and I had to increase vcore to 1.725 to get a stable 2400MHz primed.

I used to be able to get this CPU up to 2625MHz with 1.90 vcore prime stable but when I do that know, the temps spike in the 60s/70s and it just bluescreens right when I hit windows.

sounds like your processor is just overheating. you should clean out your heatsink and case intake filter and see how it affects your processor temperature.

did you ever contact thermalright tech staff? if so, what did they say?

did u update the bios? sometimes it causes it to read the temps higher...or not using the system cd it came with if u reformat
 
If CPU dies, it dies, there are no transitional stages... In ur case it seems to be a poor contact b/n cpu and HSF :D
 
overvolting and overclocking lowers the lifespan of a chip - its possible the CPU just isnt stable at those speeds anymore.
 
Or make sure the ambient temperature in your room isn't higher than usual. Summer is around the corner :D

he had a thread a while back, and it does not seem to be poor contact between heatsink and chip, based on some of the testing that he has done. the chip is hot, the base of the sink is hot, the pipes are cool, the fins are cool, and the air is cool. heat is being transferred to the sink, but is not being moved to the fins the way that it should be.

it still sounds to me like one or more of his pipes is no longer working properly.

also, i have a t-bred that is dying, and has lost half of it's cache but still runs, so i think that there can be transitional stages in rare cases.

He asked me if I had remounted the heatsink which I explicitly stated in my original e-mail. Seriously, I have yet to meet tech support from a company that actually read the e-mail thoroughly. I haven't recieved a reply back yet.

I've also heard of a lot of 1700+s that have transitional deaths. Every few weeks they have to be underclocked to keep going.

i refuse to use e-mail tech support for that very reason. when i tried, i had to go through about 5 rounds of e-mails before i was able to get somthing other than a scripted response outlining things that i have alread done. i now will only use the phone, and i will not leave my e-mail address or other contact info so that they can get back to me later and leave a totally unhelpfull voice mail or e-mail.
