why do people talk about where their CPUs are made, like in places such as malaysia, phillipines, costa rica, etc?

whats so important about that?

how do i know where my chip was made?

what are all the countries that it can be from?

thanks

its not necessarily the country, but that its two different factories, sometimes yields from one factory or the other have better overclocking results/run cooler etc. but usually only minor differences. though generally not usually, the stepping is generally more important from what I've seen.

The location is printed on the heatspreader

I was thinking only malaysia and costa rica. but I don't know for sure, someone else can answer

if its for best overclockability, then which countries are the best for producing CPUs that are best at overclocking?

Well one country doesn't just produce faster chips than another country. It is more that there are slight manufacturing differences between the factories and they produce slightly different chips. They still both meet the specifications, but one may just overclock better. There isn't always a better one. Just occasionally someone will come across a chip that overclocks really well and it turns out that the entire line of those processors from that plant overclock well. And as menelmarar said, stepping is also important. There is probably a list of good overclockers somewhere, but mainly you just have to watch the forums to see if there are any steppings that are better than others.

China and Phillipines. They package and test the chips that are shipped from the fabs. The fabs are in the US, Israel, and Ireland AFAIK.

Not very much, in my opinion, since these countries are where the CPU is packaged. Nearly all of Intel's big FABs are located in Oregon or in the SW USA and that is where the actual dies are manufactured.
