CPU core temps too high?

I just built a new system recently with an E8400...just downloaded CoreTemp, HWMonitor and PC Wizard 2008 to check my temps and they all read the same temps...are my CPU O and CPU 1 temps too high?...they both read 49C at idle

Short answer is yes, ~50C at idle is too high. Either you don't have sufficient cooling or surface area on your cooler, or your heat transfer paste is applied either too thin or too thick. It's also a possibility that the surfaces of your cpu and heatsink aren't mating well, either both slightly convex or both slightly concave.
 
the CPU cooler I am using is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro which came pre-applied with thermal paste (MX-1)...it was applied on pretty thick and not in a small single line like I read it should be applied for dual core CPU's...should I take off the cooler and re-apply my own thermal paste?

also my CPU temp is 36C which is a good temp...why would the outside CPU temp be fine but the inner CPU temps be bad?...the thermal paste would affect both set of temps correct?
 
The Tcase is calculated as a delta from the hottest core temperature, I believe. On my Q6600 it's always -10C from the hottest core.
 
No, the E8400's have issues with temp diodes. They will report high temps even using phase change or water.
 
Yes, there have been numerous threads about the temp issues. You can try to google it up. Some have argued that it's got to do with the motherboards and a need of bios updating to fix it. Some have argued it can't solely be blamed on motherboards, because it has affected all brands of motherboards, and hence people have pointed it to the diodes as a fault on intel.

If you believe that your cpu is running too hot, try touching the metal fins of your cpu heat sink, and see if they are very warm to touch.

I could have sworn there was a thread on [H] about the e8400 temperature problems...
