Background: interested in medium overclocking, nothing too extreme.
1. Is the performance of the following coolers about the same:
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Deepcool Gammaxx 400
Asetek 550LC AIO liquid cooling system (is this one similar to the old Corsair H50?)

2. Is it correct to say the best bang for the buck coolers are air coolers? Like the ones above or Thermalright True Spirit.

3. There seems to be more AIO liquid coolers around now vs 5 years ago. Is this due to the small form factor PC growth? What else is driving the increased interest in these coolers? It just seems like air cooling is out of style now.

Fun fact: I once melted an Athlon XP 2000+ cpu because the stock cooler was inadequate. That and I lived in a hot part of California and was without air conditioning. Ever since then always gone with aftermarket coolers. And I spend lots of time thinking about cases, airflow, fan noise, etc.

Intention is to determine which cooler to select for an Intel 8400 or 8600k system to be purchased in the next 1-2 months. Of course not overclocking if 8400 since locked multiplier.

those are ok coolers, fine for stock and low oc and youll get about the same results. the asetek donest come with a fan though. yeah there are some really good bang for buck air coolers but usually about ~$40. check the front page cooling reviews for good air and aio reviews. if you have the room this is a really good deal for an aio and it did a pretty darn good job in [H]'s review:

Cryorig H5 works fine, this is my bang for buck for 7700k/8700k.
I used to be a hyper 212 guy, but new stuff is hot.

H110/h115 work also but are louder.
Kraken x62 is blingy and quieter than either Corsair but an air cooler it ain't.
I prefer dual 140mm aio setups, noise is an issue for me.
