CPU bottlenecking my vid card?

yes that cpu will hold a 4850 back especiallys in game that dont utilize more than one or two cores. by how much just depends on the game, settings and res. at 1680 you would probably get about 75-80% of what the 4850 could do.

Autocad, gaming, etc... The Phenom 9550 has been pretty good but I am wondering if the Phenom 2 945 would give me a massive performance increase.
yes it would. also it would allow you a better platform for upgrading to a new gpu later. that 2.2 Phenom would really hurt the performance of a higher end next gen card.

For gaming a 4850 will top out with a Core2 Duo at about 2.7Ghz.
Add a bit more and you have the equivalent Phenom II chip from AMD (on average).
So the 3GHz Phenom 2 945 will be a decent upgrade for gaming.
If you can clock it a bit some games will appreciate it.

No, a quad core will not hold back a single HD4850. Even with two HD4850s, a quad core would not hold it back more than maybe 5% if that. No quad core in existence would hold back a single GPU, even a top end card like a HD4890 or GTX280.

Now in a dual video card setup, yes, that processor would hold it back.

Right now, my lowly 3800+ X2 holds back my 9800GT by about 30%.

I just said that in games that didnt use more than 2 cores he would be held back much more. 95% of games would never use more than 2 cores anyway so yes his 2.2 Phenom would hold him back.

quite a bit actually, i had a similar setup with a 2.3 phenom I, when i got my 720be i noticed a significant increase in fps in pretty much all my games. the phenom I's work well for your everyday applications, get a phenom II if your a big gamer.

I doubt it my e5200 with a 1066 fsb doesn't hold my 4850 back but I also game at 1080p

so you know for a fact that your cpu doesnt hold back your 4850 at all? you do know that there isnt a pop up that comes on the screen to tell you, right? lol. anyway yeah your cpu is fine at 1920x1080 with a 4850. the OPs cpu would be a little slower than yours is at 2.8 though especially in games that arent using more than two cores.

I don't mean to jack the thread but, I am about to purchase a Phenom II X4 810 BE processor along with a GTX 275. Would the CPU hold that GPU back? I didn't know this could happen before I read this thread

no not really but it depends on the res you are playing at. you certainly wont get 100% of what the gtx275 can do in some games below 1920x1080. your next gpu upgrade will certainly need some overclocking on that cpu to keep it viable.
