CPU bottleneck?

Hi everyone,

I have win7 x64 (pro), 8G ram and 6850 crossfire on an 890FX board with a 1090T pushing it all. Everything is at stock.

I'm wondering at what resolution do the following games become cpu bound vs videocard bound?

(8x msaa kills my performance from like 55fps to 15)
Dirt2: 5760x1080
Dirt3: 5760x1080

Sol Survivor: 5760x1080 (can't get over 20fps in crossfire)

The 1gb of vram is killing your performance. cpu's are the bottleneck in lower resolutions I think. I switched from a 5970 to one 6950 and my performance was the same, but with the ability to choose more AA.

You just don't have the GPU horse power to use high levels of AA at that resolution.

When your framerate tanks like that as a result of increasing your AA, it typically means you just exceeded your framebuffer. As previously stated, it's the 1GB of vram that is limiting you in this situation.

I figuredit might be framebuffer. Ah well now I wish I went for a 2G 6950+ card.....but at the time I bought my 6850 it would have been more than my 2 6850's together :)

Thanks guys, I'll be happy with what I have...

This is still quite an upgrade from my last gaming rig with a 7800GT...

Would I have been able to run 8x MSAA at 1920x1080 ? 1680x1050?

Should be able to. I ran 8xAA on most games with my 4870 512mb at 1680x1050.

Just decrease the AA and as soon as it fits in the 1GB framebuffer you should see a dramatic jump in FPS.

8x at 1920x1080 should be more than fine.

I'll have to play around with it at 1920x1080

5760x1080 @ 4xaa still looks pretty good and plays smoothly :)

lol you are comparing 512mb @ 1680x1050 to eyefinity triple 1080p displays and 1GB and saying he should be able to run 8xAA? ya might want to think about that statement again..

as far as dirt 3 goes, the one graphic setting i know that takes up a crap load of video memory is the post processing which if i remember correctly only controls the blurring effect in the game which in my opinion is annoying anyways but that's just me. try setting it to low and see if you can bump up the AA, i know setting it to low on my overclocked 8800GS allows me to run 4xAA @ 1920x1200 and everything else maxed out and my card only has 384mb of video memory so it should make a sizable difference for you to fit 8xAA into the frame buffer with the resolution you are running.

Did you read the post above mine?

Yes, it's better to read from the top down. ;)

hmm, I'd say maybe Sol Survivor might have problems with crossfire and/or landscape eyefinity. I run it at 3240x1920 maxed on a single 6970. Doesn't seem too demanding. Other than that, looks like your hitting some video memory problems. I guess it can bog down for me on the levels with lots of enemies.
