CPU becoming unstable after long-term overclock?

So I've been running an Athlon XP mobile 2600+ at around 2.4ghz for over a year.

It had run stable as such until the last week or two, I have experienced frequent reboots while playing Everquest2... I installed a software cpu temp monitor, and an then an extra fan noticing that it was a bit hotter than I wanted with little effect on the rebooting.

In order to avoid the reboots I've since dropped my multiplier from 12x to 9x .. moving from 2.4ghz to 1.8ghz in the process =\ Could the issue be something other than 'overclock fatigue' ? Curious on comments.

check the heatsink paste as it may have gone off (become dry/flaky).
Of course once taken apart to check it will need replacing anyway so make sure you have some handy.

Also as silicon ages, it wastes more power resulting in it getting hotter for the same frequency / voltage.
Each increase of 10C doubles the rate that this occurs so its good to keep heat to a minimum.
This could explain the increase in temps if the heatsink paste is ok.

Make sure the heatsink and fan are clean and dust free and that the fan is running at full speed (turn off the fan control in the CMOS or PC software).

On the other hand, is it summer where you are? ;)

what question are you asking?

dust buildup, is there dust buildup on the hs/f etc. that could cause random rebooting etc./temp spikes.
