i had the pleasant experiance of having to do a fresh reinstall of windows the other day. i really didn't want to but it was time. that was ok i guess

but then for some reason after i installed a few things, my external maxtor 5000dv 160gig drive suddenly became unavailable. explorer said the file or folder is corrupted or something.

to cut down on my ranting, let me just cut to the chase. i ended up finding this guide
and would you believe it actually worked!!

i basically used disk probe to copy the ntfs backup mbr/boot sector to the main boot sector. after xp ran chkdsk for me, everything was fine. windows tried to run chkdsk before but it crashed.

also, i had restorer 2000 but that was on this drive so i could very well use it anyway! but it's much better that i fixed the drive itself so i didn't have to use recovery software to copy files to my other drives, then reformat the drive then copy back. i knew it would be worth it to try to find out how to fix the mbr first. needless to say, i'm very happy it worked.

just thought i'd share
