So I was talking to someone today and they said that they wont run Plasma TVs because of the capacitor whine. I thought that was weird so I asked him why he thought that would happen and he told me that because of the elevation it causes capacitor whine on electronics including GPU's

So I go to wondering if those of you out there that have an issue with capacitor whine, What elevation are you at?

I have cards that whine and ones that don't. I've had cards that did and no longer do.

Your friend should lay off the crack me thinks. I think it is just how cheaply they put the card together.
 
When I had my gtx260 it whined just as much in Valdosta, GA (220ft) as it did in Columbus, OH (902ft).
When I upgraded my PSU the whine went away though.

I'm down. I have a fire pit in the back yard for bond fire and a whole basement that we can set up for a LAN. Not to mention a well stocked wine rack. Not a bad cook if I don't say so myself :D
 
I know that at least one more of us lives in Ohio.
Anyone from a much higher elevation care to chime in? Denver maybe?

I am at 4,500 feet above sea level. I think I can see your house from here.
 
Firmly below sea level here (Netherlands) :p Had some coil whine for a while until it went away after a rebuild.
 
About a 102 FT above sea level. I got a new EVGA GTX 260 that had coil whine for the first few days. Then it went away.
 
There is an issue with plasma TVs at high altitudes. The noise may be capacitor whine but it's related to the plasma technology and extra power use and cooling required at high altitudes. Here's one explanation I found online.

I'm here almost at sea level and haven't had any buzzing issues with either my plasma TV or my video cards. I probably wouldn't hear it over the fan noise anyway. :) My sister lives in the mountains of Colorado and was advised to get an LCD TV instead of plasma.

If the information in that article is correct, the issues with plasma TVs at high altitudes are completely unrelated to anything that might happen with a PSU.
 
I'm another one who would not hear any capacitor whine over the fans.
I've at least 16x 120mm fans keeping the computers in the bedroom cool.
And another 14x 120 mm in the front room.
Plus other 140mm, 92 mm, 80 mm & vid cooling fans in various boxen.

Luckily I'm not running any 60mm screaming delta's anymore.
10x of them was very loud.
But I've now got a chirping PSU fan that I must get around to changing some time soon.

I think thats why they where called screaming deltas.
If you worked near them when they where running, you ended up screaming in pain .... :p

They are why I still wake up if there's a power cut.
The sudden silence was so shocking.

I think it's funny that people can say 'capacitor whine' and actually think that capacitors, being solid-state devices, can make noises. That's like saying that you're having 'RAM module whine' issues :p
 
Doozer? You live close? I'm about 2 - 2 1/2 hours from Kendrak, that's cool that I strive to compete with your scores more than anyones and you live near here. Just bought a house in Canton, so that's cool that we've got 3 guys so close

We should start up a thread with a huge ass map and put peoples tags on it

Anyways, sorry to thread crap, but at less than 300 ft it happens here, my 260's are much louder than my 295's tho

Capacitors can make noise if they are failing.
