Core2Duo - upgrade to Core2Quad?

I think that part of it is that we're getting to a point where our computing power for our every day uses is not changing drastically enough to phase processors out as much. A first gen quad core can do what most of the people in the world need it to do just fine, and the rest it just does it slower.

Core2's have a lot of things going for them that previous processors didn't. They're Intel's first real multicore CPU, not counting the Pentium D. So their ability to multitask went through the roof compared to previous gen processors. They were also introduced at the time that chipsets started allowing 8GB of ram, which is KEY for modern day stuff. Many (most?) of the chipsets come with SATA2 as well, so an SSD is viable.

Truth. I have a first gen Core2Quad Q6600 paired with 8GB of DDR2 800, and that system still flies. Replaced the dual 9800GTX setup with a single 6850, and it'll still play all modern titles at 1080P.

That system is going to stay viable for a while, even if it is a LAN Party only rig right now.

My main websurfing laptop is still a Core2. I just upgraded it a month or two ago from a bottom of the barrel T5800 to an E8435. And, yes, even though the E8435 is supposedly Apple specific, my Dell Studio 1735 took it without a blink and the chip was cheap because nobody knows what it is. A very nice 50% CPU improvement for older laptops.
