1. This post targets very specific group of potential users.
2. This post is info only. I am not really asking for debate :)

3. One of the common issues per Sandy Bridge is K-series or Non-K series choice. Later there will be S-series and T-series but these two are power issue oriented and potential users have very specific demand so not the focus of this post.

4. The common consideration is K 2500 can be overclocked to max but lack certain features. non-K 2500 has all standard features included.

5. Today I learn a critically observation in the Asus Motherboard thread regarding SB setup. Once the multiplier past 44x, most sleep/hibernate routines have issues. Maybe those deep processor power saving state issues as well (not sure).

6. Thus if you want absolutely everything to work properly at this point. 44x is the maximum you can go.

7. Core i5 2500 non-K turbo up to 37x, so the difference here is 7x. The question is then how much difference to sway for that 7x performance in actual application usage.

8. Another option is to go for the supposedly new Z68-chipset based motherboards where it is said you can overclock non-K processors using traditional way.

sorry the title should say Core i5 2500. Corrected earlier mistake thread title

FACT: YOU CAN OVERCLOCK ANY CORE I5/ I7 SANDY BRIDGE BY + 4 MULTIPLIER.

This means the maximum overclock for a 2500 would be:

3.8 GHz (4 cores loaded, turbo)
4.0 GHz (2 cores loaded)
4.1 GHz (1 core loaded)

SEE HERE FOR MORE DETAILS.

You know, I keep TRYING to get people to acknowledge the truth about non-K Sandy Bridge overclocking. They keep passing this bullshit about non-K CPUs being completely locked-down.

In any case, with a max 4-processor multiplier of 38x and max single-core multiplier of 41x, your point is valid about it being damn-near the viability ceiling.
