Yup, it would definitely make it more susceptible to scratches.

But then again, with the Socket 775 rated for only about 20 installs and removals because of the scratches on the gold pads underneath the processor I don't think it would make a difference.

I have never removed my processor from my system since install. I have had to redo the heat sink about 3 times because of miscellaneous issues (didn't have AS5, replaced PS, reapplication of AS5). Once they are in the system, they usually don't come out.

Yeah, sorry. Not my style. Anyways, back on topic. They are probably using it due to its strength. It holds up under the max rated 450g load that is put on it. No doubt that the silicon on the back has some help in the but this probably helps the IHS from getting broken or snapped or bent off the packaging.

Anyone know of any cooling reviews where they compared a P4 with and w/o an IHS installed?

I think removing the IHS from a P4 is too difficult to do without breaking the chip. I've never heard of someone doing that.

You can't remove IHS from modern processors. It is bonded to the core, as far as I know.

actually you can remove the IHS... take a look... the cracking on the core is from the owner actually lapping the core... but the proc. still works

Gold plating would probably be best, its got high thermal conductivity, is soft (would conform best) and is completely non-reactive.

Anyone want to fund my project?
