Coolermaster V8 - Initial Impressions

Upgraded my computer over the weekend to a new motherboard (Gigabyte's Z68X-UD3H-B3), CPU (i5-2500K, of course), and the Coolermaster V8 HSF for eventual overclocking once my rig settles in.

First all, I bought almost all of my components from the local Microcenter store for a dynamite deal (seriously, you can't beat $110 for that motherboard!), and the V8 too for $40 instead of the $50 on newegg.

What did I think of this HSF? In a word, it's a friggin' MONSTER. I knew it was going to be a big sucker, but I had no idea it was going to be like King Kong in my computer! To give you an idea, I use one of the largest cases out there, the Antec 1200, and I had to remove the side case fan just to close it up. Yeah, it's that big. Fortunately, I still have 7 other fans in the case to keep it nice and cool.

Speaking of cool, I have the fan at about halfway via the nice manual knob directly controlling the fan's speed and my i5's running consistently at 30º C, but that's on mostly idle speeds. In any case, I'm happy with the temps.

Oh, and how QUIET it is! Well, at least compared to my last one, which was the Freezer Pro 7 on an old but still kick-ass EVGA 680i board/Core 2 Duo E6600. The noise level is a big deal to me, so the V8 gets my endorsement on that front so far.

I'll come back once my rig is all nice and ready for some OC'ing and gaming.
 
It's been around for a while, but yeah it's pretty good at what it does.
 
I was not impressed by it to say the least....mounting system was absolute rubbish and didnt cool that well.

I have heard they made a new revision with better mounting, so maybe its not so bad anymore.... :)

Also heard that the V6 GT was also a great cooler as well.
 
Mediocre at best... I'm looking for a replacement, though. Its large, but can't keep up with my i7-920 @ 3.8 ghz and beyond. I tried lapping it to see if it would improve, but I really didn't keep track of the results. I tried mounting 80mm delta on front to see it it'll improve (I have a 120 Scythe G exhaust and a 220mm fan above it), but netted the same results - temps in the 80-90's. It does keep up at stock speed though...

Unless your getting a deal on it, and you're using it on a lower TDP chip - I'd steer clear, but it seems you may have covered. Good luck.
