I've got a 9800 Pro 256 which is just a repackaged XT (Sapphire card with the shiny metal heatsink shroud).

I'm at work and maybe too distracted and not finding it, but isn't there supposed to be a new VGA Silencer out for the 9800 XT? And if so does it require removing the shim (don't really want to do that initially).

Or go the DIY route and make one out of a SocketA CPU cooler. (I used a Thermaltake Slim Volcano 10+ )

Took me all of 2 hours last night.

Items needed:
1 SocketA/370 cooler (I used Thermaltake Volcano 10+)
3 4-40 machine screws
2 4-40 nuts
Dremel or small hacksaw
Epoxy (I used 5 minute type) or Locktite (epoxy works better)
2 small springs (I used the ones from the stock cooler)
2 non-conductive washers
4 metal washers sized for 4-40
Themal grease (AS3 or similar)

Steps:
1)Mark base of heatsink for holes (make sure you are clearing all the components (also stay inside the white box) and have a good mating surface). A mechanical pencil works great.
2) Drill hole for 4-40 machine screws (a 5/32 bit is what I used)
3) Take one of the 4-40 screws and cut a slot in the threads on two sides (this makes a poor mans tap).
4) tap holes with 4-40 screw. Be careful and go slow. (or just go buy a 4-40 tap)
5) put small amount of epoxy in tapped holes and on screws, screw into heatsink.
6) when epoxy has set remove heads of screws with dremel or hacksaw.
7) place themal grease on core & place heatsink on.
8) attach on backside using washers, springs, & nuts.
(In this order: card surface,non-conductive washer, metal washer, spring, metal washer, nut) Tighten as far as it can go. Don't overtighten.

I'll post pics later tonight.

Yah, I have an old pentium Pro cooler with a pretty nice 60mm fan on it. I bet it would work... but I'd rather a VGA silencer to exhaust the hot air out of the case. I'm wondering if anyone knows which silencer is supposed to be compatible with the 9800 XT. I haven't found it but I thought there was a ver. 4 or something.
