Contemplating a Shuttle build.

Recently I fell into an E8500 for free. Long story short, buddy needed a new motherboard, Fry's had a E8500/ECS mobo combo for REALLY cheap, Installed it for him, and got to keep the E8500. This opened up my budget a decent amount.

This is the Shuttle I'm thinking about purchasing-

It has a 400W PSU. I'm all good and fine with what it comes with, since I won't be jumping into a newer processor until DDR3 prices come down and until I won't have two socket types to choose from Intel, since they're releasing another socket type in the near future. Plus my cpu and ram will out last the video card.

With a 400w PSU, I can run a 9800GT or 4850 which is good and fine with me since I don't HAVE to play games at 1920x1080.

But what's dictating my purchase is this- When new video cards come out with die shrinks and all, will their be medium range (like the 4850) that come out that require a higher wattage rating?

I'm really torn between just building a Micro-atx rig or going with a Shuttle, since I like the size of them, I've heard good things about their temps, and it would look great by my TV.
 
I'd be more worried that future GPUs will sport larger cooling systems (thus, larger PCB) that prevent one from installing a desired video card into a P2 chassis.

I would also hate the thought of waiting 6+ months down the road for a die shrink for a particular model in a GPU family that may or may not show up in a smaller footprint.

With that said, the PSU in that Shuttle above is far more powerful than you're giving credit.
 
Yea, I'm reading that people are running 4870's in that chassis. Guess I didn't think they were THAT good of power supplies.I don't have to use a sound card, I'm just fine with on board audio if I have to get a dual slot video card. Plus I figure with a 4870 or a GTX 260(Still have to look into that one, me thinks it would push the PSU, but I could be wrong), the shuttle itself would last longer.

Anyone put a 4870/GTX 260 in a P2 chassic?
 
Shuttle arent good at handling high end GPUs in most of their models, just look at their gpu compatibility list for the shuttle your looking at.
 
A GTX260 works perfectly fine in a SP35P2 Pro. Do some research before you pull the trigger on one though.

The compatability list isn't final word. It's just a guideline for those who are not [H].
 
Yes but the Pro version as a 450w PSU the none-pro has a 400w, which is the one I'm contemplating on getting.

I haven't decided on it or not, still reading as much as I can about the pro and none-pro. Going to look into getting a 450w shuttle power supply for a later date. As far as size is concerned, you can fit dual slot higher end GPU's by cutting out a portion of the fan housing, which isn't a big deal for me, perfectly comfortable with doing so.

The only thing that's holding me back is being able to upgrade at a later date. Having to get a whole new case and power supply when the time comes to ante up on a new rig as opposed to building a Micro rig in a Lanbox lite or Sugo and having everything be replaceable. Weighing the Pros and Cons take time.
 
Shuttle PSUs are very hardy and versatile. Smaller boards, fans, etc. also mean less power requirements than a full regular sized computer. You will usually be able to stretch the type of videocard you have in there past the normal wattage ratings.

I have had an 8800GT in my Shuttle for over a year and my PSU is only 250watts.

9800GT and 4850GT are basically the same power draw. Now, the P2 is slightly more power hunger than the typical G5 and also require more power if you run the extra harddrive, etc. (and there are more fans) but I would say you would be able to run a 4870 or more in there.

Incorrect. The SP35P2 Pro has a stock 400W psu. I'm looking at one right now.

However, the SX38P2 Pro has a 450W psu.

There are only minor differences between the two P35 chipset based shuttles. The X38 chipset shuttle is a different story...
 
Oh my mistake, was looking at them on Newegg, didn't realize it was an X38. The X38 does have one feature besides the bigger PSU that's compelling, and that's PCI-E 16x 2.0. But that's it, and from what I've read 2.0 doesn't make a different. Can't say I'd run Crossfire. Maybe if the 4850's drop.
 
I run a GTX 260 in mine no problems. This is with an OC'd E6750, 2 HDDs, optical drive, an upgraded 80mm fan and an extra 92mm fan thrown in for good measure. Shuttle PSUs are quite capable indeed. I've even read the 4870X2 works fine in the SX38P2 with the 450W PSU.

The only thing is that the longer 10.5" cards like the GTX 260 and 9800GTX run into the 4-pin 12V connector on the mobo. You can either mod the connector, mod an extension cable, or mod your video card HSF. The extension cable mod is probably your best bet, read about that here and here.

If you don't want to mess with all that, apparently the SX48P2s are now shipping with fixed connector placement, and the soon to be released SX58H7 with 500W PSU will also fit these cards fine.
