constant freezing durring games....

i had the computer in my sig. The only thing ive changed so far is the MOBO. ive switched to an MSI k8n neo2. for some reason when i play a game like sims 2 or ut2004 it will play fine for a little bit. then it will freeze for about 3-6 seconds then catch up and work fine again. then it will do it again, and again and again. none of my temps are out of place. processor doesnt go over 45 on load. my 6800 ultra doesnt go over 61 on load. its clocked at 450/1150. ive had it at stock and it still does it. i ran 3dmark 2003 and it ran the first 3 tests fine. the 4th test this did happen once. i had the 66.32 drivers installed but went back to 61.17 to see if it would help and it didnt.

one wierd thing. I had fast writes on and i ran 3dmark 2003 and scored 5900 with 16xaf and 4xaf on. then i went into bios and shut that off and i scored 7100. I know fast writes did something like this before on my 9700 pro on a diff machine, so i checked that first, it doesnt seem to happen that often any more, but its still present.

if you turn all graphic settings down (res/aa/af) it barely happens at all if at all, when everything is on (16xaf/4xaa/1280x1024+) it happends more often. any ideas of what to check?

i have dir x 9.0c installed

and i have the newest mobo drivers from MSI's website.

What video card did you have before your current one? Did you remove the drivers properly. I would uninstall, go into safemode, use driver cleaner 3, then reboot, then reinstall the newest Nvidia drivers...Make sure your videocard is getting enough power.
 
this is a fresh install using XP sp1 and a 6800 ultra. the 6800 ultra was in another machine without a problem. Im leaning to a setting or something but im not sure what.
 
yeah this happened to me too, just go into your motherboard bios and disable FASTWRITE, works for me now and no freezing for me in 3dmark03, cs:s, and doom 3, and then catches up a few secs later.... that should solve it i can almost gurantee it :)
o yeah and i have an ultra too
 
yea but i did that and i still seem to notice it here and there. No where near when it was enabled. Im gonna play some UT see if i notice it. Ill probably put down a good hour and ill come back with the results.
 
try updating ur ultra's bios, if the version isn't 5.40.02.15.07 then u probably have the older bios with bugs in it.. flash it to the new bios 5.40.02.15.07 and it will fix teh freezing, lots of other people are hvaing this problem too then after they flashed it it went away
 
it might be the psu. I have a 5900xt with a 350wtt psu, always froze in games, then upped it to a 480watt, it doesn't freeze anymore except if my overclocks are too high
 
i have bios 5.40.02.05.12

i heard there was a performance drop with the flash to the new bios? is this correct? Does flashing the bios void the warranty on the card? its a BFG 6800 ultra. I had it or a while and no problems at all till this new motherboard.

I have a 520w vantec stealth PSU. its the same power supply that was running it before.


UPDATE:

after about an hour of UT 2004 i didnt notice one stutter or freeze. So maybe this is a good sign. Ill play around with it tomarrow too and see how it goes. Im thinking it was the fast right thing now, im just surprised i noticed a stutter after disabling in bios but now its like its not existant. Ill try some demos later and see if anything changes.
 
hmmm you already ahve the newest bios i think cause i have the same bios ;) and gl and keep on testing if you have no stutters then it probably is a'ok
