Console sales grew by 43% with Nintendo leading the pack. Actual sales figures, despite being lower than what the companies reported earlier this month, were the best ever for Sony and Microsoft.

The Wii's competitors among the latest generation of console game systems, the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, also had their best months ever in December. Microsoft sold nearly 1.3 million 360s (bringing total U.S. sales to 8.5 million), while Sony sold about 800,000 PS3s (2.8 million total). Wii's total U.S. sales reached 6.3 million.

Thanks to me and millions of Christmas shoppers ;-)

You're welcome Nintendo.

I guess the numbers reported by the big three console makers was a little different than the actual number of consoles sold. Well, that certainly puts that debate we had earlier this month to rest. Maybe the wild numbers we saw just two weeks ago were units shipped to retail versus today’s actual units sold.

Last week we promised to post the actual retail totals when they came available and, we we're right, the numbers released by the individual companies last week were a tad bit inflated...

I'd be interested in knowing how much of a net profit that the Wii made compared to how big the PS3 and 360's losses are.

360s losses? You think they're still making a loss on the console? /ignorance =0

As far as I know, the Wii has always made a profit, the 360 has been for a while and the PS3 with the recent hardware changes is now close too. We posted the numbers here a while back.

Of course they've lost money. How ignorant are you?

Ok, I'll look it up. Microsoft lost $1.9 Billion dollars for fiscal year 2007. link

I think he just meant that the 360 is now profitable per system sold. Manufacturing costs vs sale cost. The PS3 is very close to profitable now, and should be per system by summer as well, but of course they both have suffered heavy losses in their gaming departments due to the manufacturing costs of the console.

I believe the PS3 is down to 400$ per unit, down from 900$ a unit originally. Almost breaking even.

You understand how fiscal reporting works? It doesn't mean it's an actual loss, it just means they didn't make as much than they did the prior report. Companies love to use this as a motivation as cutbacks and downsizing... while they still may be posting profits. No company is in the business to actually lose money, they still make a ton or else they wont be in business.

Their reports have been offset because of the repairs, but make no mistake, Nintendo also had a few recalls that wasn't pennies either.

All of these companies are making immense profits, or else they wouldn't be sitting here. And just so you know, an investment for a duration of a time doesn't count as a loss either.

The cost of a console isn't just the manufacturing cost. It involves the cost of the warranty, and any other "free" service. If they're posting losses, that means they're losing money. Maybe not cash today, but it is still a loss at some point in the products life.

Well, it's not that the numbers reported by the three console makers were inflated, the investors would rip them apart for that, it's more that NPD data does not capture 100% of U.S. sales. NPD data is great at showing relative market share, but the absolute numbers are not representative of all sales, because not all retailers report their sales to NPD.

I think all their prior Xbox reports have been losses also. ...Xbox 360 consoles and its entertainment division's $7.3 billion loss over 5 years.

MS is making money, just not with their consoles.

Exactly what 4saken said.

You know JethroXP, you are right. The only reason people in the industry latch onto NPD numbers is that they are some of the only "official" third party numbers out there without having to rely on the manufacturer themselves.

When I reported on Sony's numbers last week (1.2 million consoles sold in 5 weeks) I had everyone jump me...for and against the numbers, for and against the term "holiday season", for and against domestic versus worldwide and so on. One week later the NPD numbers came out and sure enough, they are drasticly different than Sony's numbers last week.

NPD numbers are just third party numbers that can be used as an independent gauge of how well each console is selling.

Found this:

NPD's data is generally based on reporting from around 60 to 65 percent of retailers in the U.S., so the removal of one chain such as Toys R Us is not likely major so long as solid replacements (like Amazon) are added. As Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter says in his reports, "While we cannot be certain that the NPD games data is accurate, we believe that the data provides a relevant benchmark for tracking U.S. retail sell-through."

I'd love to know how many of those Wii's bought were part of bundles, and its percentage within total Wii sales......considering I simply can't find a Wii anywhere for $250 or even $350, which is the most I would pay for a bundle.

Yes, but they don't make money from the hardware - they make the money from the licensing fees on the games. Microsoft is still taking a loss on the consoles, but enough games are being sold that they more than make up the difference. Its the same with the PS3. The only console that is turning a profit on the actual hardware is the Wii

God, the Wii is pissing me off. I want one but no matter what I do, I always prevail.

Today I discovered the Wii's were in stock at my local Circuit City. I wait in line (5th person) for about half an hour in the freakin cold (35F). Then when the store opens the employees told us that you need a voucher in order to get a Wii. Thus, I would have had to been there at 6AM in the morning... I was pissed but there were others that were outraged.

I'm starting to think the Wii is not worth it atm.

I am so glad I managed to get mine launch day...
